Job Description
Performance Foodservice (PFG) is a leading broadline food distributor in the United States, known for its strong relationships with local customers such as independent restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, schools, and quick-service eateries. Featuring a skilled team of sales representatives, chefs, consultants, and other industry experts, PFG prides itself on offering tailored advice that helps its customers improve operations, develop creative menus, select the right products, and optimize business strategies. The company not only delivers high-quality food but also supports independent restaurant owners in realizing their entrepreneurial dreams through outstanding service and operational support. PFG fosters a safe and inclusive work environment focused on rewards, recognition, and respect, which helps maintain employee engagement and satisfaction across all departments. The company strongly upholds equal employment opportunity principles, providing comprehensive policies aligned with federal regulations to ensure a diverse and welcoming workforce.
The Entry Level Driver Trainee role at PFG is an exceptional opportunity for individuals seeking to start a professional driving career with a reputable distribution company. This position primarily involves training to become a skilled driver of tractor trailers or straight trucks, primarily engaged in intrastate and interstate transportation of food and food-related products. Trainees gain valuable hands-on experience driving on various routes including local deliveries, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight hauls. Emphasis is placed on safety, compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and excellent customer service. Drivers typically work Monday through Friday with occasional Saturday shifts, often averaging 12-hour days with options for 4 or 5-day work weeks. Average annual pay for drivers is approximately $83,000, reflecting competitive compensation for this critical role.
This entry level role requires a valid CDL A license and is aimed at individuals committed to attending and successfully completing PFG's structured driver training programs such as the Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program. Trainees ride with experienced driver trainers, assisting in deliveries while learning essential safety checks including pre-trip and post-trip inspections and proper loading and securing of freight. Drivers are responsible for following DOT and company guidelines diligently, reporting any safety issues promptly, and maintaining accurate records of their hours and delivery documentation. Key duties include attending training sessions, performing freight inspections and inventories, delivering products to customers based on predetermined route schedules, unloading goods, obtaining customer signatures, handling returns, and ensuring proper security of loads and equipment.
Candidates must meet several requirements including being at least 21 years of age, holding a clean motor vehicle record (MVR) for the past three years, passing drug and road tests, and having the physical ability to lift and manage freight of varying sizes and weights. The company emphasizes safety and efficient operations while providing a comprehensive benefits package from day one, including health and wellness benefits, employee stock purchase plans, 401K employer matching, education assistance, paid time off, and many other valuable perks.
Overall, this role offers an excellent career launching point with significant growth potential, supporting America’s food distribution system through essential and respected work. Candidates join a culture that prioritizes safety, respect, and diversity, offering supportive training and rewarding opportunities for career advancement within a recognized industry leader.
