Job Description
NV5 is a leading engineering and consulting services firm publicly traded on NASDAQ under the ticker NVEE. The company provides comprehensive solutions across five key business verticals: Construction Quality Assurance, Infrastructure, Utility Services, Program Management, and Environmental services. With a wide network of offices nationwide and internationally, NV5 is dedicated to assisting clients in planning, designing, building, testing, certifying, and operating projects that enhance community infrastructure and contribute to societal well-being. The company’s multidisciplinary team includes engineers, architects, construction and program managers, environmental experts, and other professionals unified by a commitment to quality and innovation. NV5's mission is focused on delivering impactful solutions that improve lives, creating a dynamic and rewarding workplace for passionate individuals ready to contribute to meaningful projects.
NV5 is currently looking to hire an Engineering Technician to join their team servicing the Charlottesville, Richmond, and Roanoke, Virginia locations. This role is integral to the Construction Quality Assurance vertical and involves monitoring activities on construction sites with a strong emphasis on the testing and assessment of various construction materials such as soils, concrete, and asphalt pavement. The Engineering Technician will perform precise testing methods including In-Place Density Tests using nuclear density gauges, drive sleeves, and sand cone methods. In addition to density testing, the role includes aggregate sampling and extensive work related to concrete, grout, and masonry. This includes air content measurement, slump testing, visual observations, and casting samples of concrete cylinders, mortar cubes, and grout prisms, as well as obtaining core samples. Asphalt sampling and backscatter tests are also part of the duties, with some tasks involving coring operations. Equipment such as a company truck, phone, and safety gear will be provided to support the technician in fieldwork.
The Engineering Technician position demands physical stamina and resilience as the job primarily takes place in field environments exposed to various weather conditions including wet, humid, cold, and hot climates. Individuals in this role spend extended periods standing and walking, often navigating rough and uneven terrain while carrying or lifting items up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 100 pounds. The nature of the duties requires strong physical mobility including the ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach. Given the demanding outdoor environment, weekend, overtime, and overnight work along with travel may be necessary. Safety consciousness and good teamwork skills are critical for success in this collaborative and challenging setting.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for candidates to advance their careers in the construction materials testing sector, with NV5 providing training for those without prior work experience, although some construction-related background is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate solid math and writing skills, exemplify strong work ethics, and be team players. Certification such as VDOT Soils and Aggregate Compaction or NICET Construction Materials Testing Level II is preferred but can be achieved post-employment. NV5 values diversity and inclusion, providing equal employment opportunities without discrimination and a supportive environment for professional growth. The company also offers a competitive compensation and benefits package that includes medical, dental, life insurance, paid time off, 401(k) plans, and opportunities for professional development and advancement, making this an attractive role for motivated individuals seeking impactful work in engineering and construction quality assurance.
