Job Description
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a global leader in cloud computing, providing a comprehensive and widely adopted cloud platform that powers companies across the world. AWS is the backbone behind critical digital infrastructures, enabling businesses to innovate and scale rapidly with advanced technological resources. As a subsidiary of Amazon, AWS embraces innovation, inclusion, and career development, making it a top choice for professionals aiming to thrive in the technology sector. The company places strong emphasis on diverse cultural experiences, mentorship, and maintaining an inclusive workplace where employees can grow and contribute to pioneering cloud services. AWS operates a vast network of mission-critical data centers across multiple locations, supporting everything from startups to Fortune 500 companies with reliable, scalable, and secure cloud computing solutions.
The Data Center Engineering Technician role is a critical hands-on position that ensures the continuous operation and reliability of AWS’s global data center infrastructure. This role is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and operating the electrical and mechanical systems that keep the data centers running with extraordinary uptime levels, targeting 99.999 percent availability. These technicians work directly with electrical equipment such as standby diesel generators, three-phase electrical systems including switch gear, UPS units, PDUs, as well as mechanical components like chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, pumps, and motors. The goal is to ensure the seamless functioning of all mission-critical facilities within the data centers.
Technicians engage daily in monitoring building management and electrical power systems, performing preventative maintenance, root cause analysis, and repairs, and evaluating fire and life safety equipment. They play an essential role in managing rack installations and decommissions and supporting projects from conception through completion. This position demands cooperation with contractors and vendors, ensuring all onsite work complies with safety standards and regulatory requirements. Flexibility is key as shift schedules may rotate, include night shifts or weekends, and duties may be required across more than one facility or site.
Candidates joining this team benefit from working alongside a diverse group of professionals, including software, hardware, network engineers, operations managers, and security experts. The culture fosters innovation, inclusivity, and continuous learning, offering access to mentorship programs, career development resources, and a supportive work-life balance. Notably, AWS emphasizes accommodating employees’ needs through flexible schedules and robust health and retirement benefits.
This position supports data centers in varying operational stages, sometimes involving temporary assignments to alternative sites for training until the assigned facility becomes operational. Travel between sites or relocation might be necessary, with relocation stipends offered to eligible candidates. The role demands the physical ability to perform maintenance tasks including lifting up to 39 pounds independently, climbing ladders, and working in environments requiring protective equipment.
The compensation for this role in Sparks, Nevada, ranges from $36.00 to $63.00 per hour, including sign-on bonuses and restricted stock units. AWS encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply, highlighting their commitment to equal employment opportunities and accommodations throughout the hiring process.
