The Engineer position at CPS Energy is a pivotal role responsible for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective management of the generation, electric transmission, and distribution systems. This position encompasses engineering responsibilities related to the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of various infrastructure components including power plants, transmission lines, substations, distribution systems, gas systems, and control centers. The Engineer’s role extends to continuously monitoring and balancing energy flow, responding swiftly to system disturbances, and ensuring seamless delivery of electric and gas services to customers.
Furthermore, the Engineer will engage in cross-functional planning and system strategy initiatives that address the evolving needs of the business in a rapidly changing energy landscape. This involves collaborating with stakeholders from generation, transmission, distribution, gas, forecasting, finance, regulatory, and operations teams to assess complex technical information and support long-range system planning efforts. The Engineer is expected to develop data-informed, practical recommendations that enhance system reliability, cost effectiveness, and operational readiness.
This position demands a professional who thrives on managing ambiguity and uncertainty, with a strong capability to develop new processes and contribute to the foundation of emerging engineering and planning programs. The Engineer will act as a subject matter expert, mentor junior engineers, and may hold limited supervisory responsibilities. Placement within pay grade 16 reflects the responsibilities and qualifications required, with consideration for adjustments based on individual credentials.
Successful candidates must hold a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, possess a Texas Professional Engineer (PE) certification, and demonstrate substantial expertise across various engineering disciplines including transmission engineering. Job Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering field from an ABET accredited four-year college or university
- Texas Professional Engineer (PE) certification
- Demonstrated mastery of engineering discipline skills
- Ability to lead cross-functional business initiatives and teams
- Demonstrated ability to effectively handle a broad range of engineering assignments with minimum supervision
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams on internal projects
- Demonstrated ability to manage project costs, timeline, scope, and risks
- Ability to effectively check work product for adequacy, quality and accuracy
- Effective communication skills focused on understanding customer needs and developing resolution
- Strong people skills with bias for a collaborative working style
- Ability to work call duty and occasional unscheduled work in the evenings, weekends, or holidays after experience level permits
- Ability to travel occasionally to off-site work, seminars, and inspections
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Package

Job Duties
- Attends seminars and continuing education opportunities for professional development
- Evaluates and recommends new standards, products, and/or services
- Recommends and implements improvements to processes and procedures
- May include limited supervisory responsibilities, including lower level engineers
- Makes frequent independent decisions and recommendations that affect the section, department, and/or division
- Participates in and provides input to area budget
- Actively works within financial objectives set by management

- May sign and seal own engineering work and engineering work prepared by staff under oversight
- Performs other project and process improvement initiatives as assigned
- Support cross-functional planning initiatives by partnering with internal stakeholders to evaluate system needs and identify engineering solutions
- Analyzes technical, operational, and planning data to support long-range infrastructure strategies and capital investment prioritization
- Helps develop, refine, and document processes, assumptions, methodologies, and recommendations for new or evolving engineering and planning programs
- Provides engineering input into complex, multi-disciplinary initiatives
- Prepares technical analyses, presentations, and recommendations for leadership and cross-functional partners
- Identifies risks, dependencies, and improvement opportunities to enhance reliability, efficiency, and customer value
