The Emergency Department Technician role at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels involves a multifaceted skill set that combines elements of emergency and patient care technology. The ED Technician must possess the abilities of an ED Tech, Patient Registrar, Unit Clerk, and Monitor Tech, performing a wide range of nursing tasks delegated by registered nurses. This position is vital in supporting the nursing team, facilitating seamless patient care, and maintaining an organized and safe patient environment. The technician is expected to operate within hospital policies and protocols, contributing to the overall efficiency and quality of care delivered to patients.
As an Emergency Department Technician, the incumbent assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, carefully observes patients for changes in condition, and ensures proper use and maintenance of medical equipment. They perform phlebotomy, collect specimens, monitor patient vitals using various equipment, and are trained in important procedures such as venipuncture, splinting, and dressing changes. Additionally, the technician supports clerical functions including patient registration, transcribing orders, and maintaining vital hospital and patient records. This role demands a compassionate, detail-oriented individual who can adapt care methods to meet the unique physical, cultural, and developmental needs of each patient. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Completion of Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Basic EMT, Intermediate EMT, Patient Care Tech program, or military medic training
- 1-2 years of patient care experience in acute care hospital, emergency department, EMT field, Emergency Care, or military medic setting preferred
- BLS certification required
- Must maintain valid certification such as Certified Nursing Assistant license, Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Patient Care Tech, or EMT national registry or state license
- Ability to perform phlebotomy and other delegated RN tasks
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work night shifts from 7 PM to 7 AM
- Adherence to hospital policies and procedures
Job Qualifications

Job Duties
- Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS competencies: leader of self, leader of others, or leader of leaders
- Assists with admission, transfer, and discharges of patients
- Observes patient conditions, recognizes changes, and reports to the RN
- Escorts stable patients to other departments
- Cleans, procures, and returns equipment and supplies
- Assists with ordering and maintaining stock items
- Performs special procedures such as venipuncture, splinting, staple and suture removal, nonsterile dressing changes, peak expiration flow rate, pulse oximetry, and crutch training
- Sets up for Emergency Department procedures and assists the RN as directed
- Operates patient monitoring equipment, records rhythm strips, runs 12 lead EKGs, biomarkers, and glucometer readings
- Performs phlebotomy and collects laboratory specimens
- Adapts patient assessment and treatment methods to accommodate developmental needs
- Performs clerical duties such as serving as receptionist, transcribing orders, and maintaining records
- Acts as a patient registrar greeting patients, documenting demographic and insurance information
- Demonstrates adherence to the CORE values of CHRISTUS Health
- Performs other duties as assigned
