Job Description

Amazon Robotics is a leading innovator in robotic automation and intelligent systems, driving the future of warehouse and fulfillment technologies. As a subsidiary of Amazon, the company focuses on developing advanced robotics systems that enhance operational efficiency and safety in distribution centers worldwide. The team combines cutting-edge research with impactful real-world applications, making it a pioneer in the robotics industry. Amazon Robotics empowers millions of products to reach customers swiftly and reliably through automation while prioritizing safety and performance.

This role is for an Embedded Software Development Engineer (SDE) within Amazon Robotics' Compass team, responsible for maintaining and advancing a library of safety-critical software modules used across Amazon's vast robotics fleet. These modules form the certified safety foundation that ensures robots operate securely alongside humans. The Embedded SDE will translate innovative research and development algorithms into production-grade embedded software that complies with stringent functional safety standards. The position involves a deep understanding of software certification processes where the engineer will participate in the full safety certification lifecycle by producing high-quality code, thorough documentation, and certification evidence.

This role requires collaboration with engineers across multiple disciplines, including safety, laboratory testing, and quality assurance, to maintain traceability from design requirements to implementation and certification. The Embedded SDE will also serve as a critical communication link, providing upstream requirements feedback to the research team to steer algorithm development toward compliance with certification objectives.

As a member of the Compass team, the engineer will contribute to novel approaches in safe autonomy that scale across various robotic platforms, integrating safety with advanced techniques such as motion planning, reinforcement learning, and foundation models. The role's impact directly influences the safe interaction of robots with people on an unprecedented scale at Amazon.

The position demands a candidate with substantial experience in embedded software, real-time systems, and safety-critical development processes. Essential qualifications include expertise in C++ for embedded systems, familiarity with safety coding standards like MISRA C++ and AUTOSAR, and experience in translating prototype research software into reliable, certifiable products.

Amazon Robotics values diversity and inclusion, welcoming candidates from varied backgrounds who are passionate about innovation and making a global impact. The offered position is based in Pasadena, California, with a competitive annual salary range from $143,700 to $194,400, complemented by sign-on bonuses and restricted stock units (RSUs). Amazon also provides comprehensive employee benefits including health coverage and 401(k) matching, supporting a balanced and rewarding career.

Job Duties

  • Own the library of safety-critical embedded software modules, taking full responsibility for their quality, maintainability, and certification readiness
  • Translate R&D algorithm code from the core development team into production-grade, certifiable embedded software that meets functional safety standards
  • Define and communicate software requirements and constraints upstream to the core R&D team, ensuring their algorithm development is compatible with certification objectives
  • Drive the software through the full safety certification lifecycle, producing the code, documentation, and evidence required for formal certification
  • Develop and maintain embedded software following safety-critical coding standards (e.g., MISRA C++, AUTOSAR) and best practices for deterministic, real-time execution
  • Collaborate with safety engineers, lab engineers, and the testing/quality SDE to ensure end-to-end traceability from safety requirements through implementation to certification evidence
