The Elementary School Cafeteria Manager II role at Turnagain Elementary is a full-time, nine-month position within the Food Service department, offering a salary range of $20.14 to $21.19 per hour, dependent on experience. This role is pivotal in ensuring that all meals served at the elementary school are prepared safely, on time, and in compliance with state and federal food safety guidelines. The manager oversees the daily operations of the school cafeteria, including inspecting food deliveries, maintaining sanitary kitchen conditions, and keeping accurate records of meals served. This position requires close adherence to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) standards and effective management of food inventory, cash handling, and staff coordination. The Cafeteria Manager II also ensures compliance with the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) standards to maintain food safety and quality. The role demands strong organizational and leadership skills to supervise cafeteria assistants, coordinate schedules, and manage customer service issues promptly and fairly. Job Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of the education requirement
  • One year of food service experience in general food preparation, proper food handling, food safety, and sanitation
  • Proficiency in and experience cashiering and working with Microsoft Office
  • Must be proficient in basic math such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication
  • Must attend the four-hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety course and pass the associated examination within 21 calendar days from date of hire
  • Preferred one year of supervisory experience including planning and directing employees' daily work schedule and tasks
  • Evidence of work experience providing training in staff kitchen responsibilities
  • Knowledge of pre-plate and centralized food preparation and delivery
  • Previous food service experience as food service manager
  • Experience with food service point of sale and inventory management systems

  • Previous experience as a food service manager
  • Experience with food service point of sale and inventory management systems

Job Duties

  • Manage all food and supply inventories, order supplies, maintain production records, handle cash procedures, make bank deposits, submit paperwork to Student Nutrition office
  • Ensure meals are prepared on schedule for an estimated number of students
  • Monitor and record kitchen equipment temperatures, ensure proper food heating and cooling times and temperatures per HACCP requirements
  • Resolve complaints timely and communicate concerns to supervisor
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate school cafeteria assistants
  • Coordinate employee timecards and leave requests with supervisor
  • Prepare all meal programs timely and organize and assign work to kitchen staff
  • Maintain sanitation and food safety practices according to regulations
  • Ensure compliance with NSLP for Free and Reduced meals and maintain accurate records per Student Nutrition Department and USDA requirements
  • Submit maintenance requests and report major maintenance problems to supervisor
  • Adhere to Student Nutrition Department and Anchorage School District policies and procedures
  • Understand USDA and State guidelines for meal pattern and service requirements
  • Plan, organize, and make decisions independently in a fast-paced environment within limited timelines
  • Assign and direct student aides and substitute employees as needed
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and the public
