The position of Receiving Kitchen Cook within the Food Service Department offers an engaging, hands-on role focused on supporting the preparation and serving of healthy meals in school cafeterias throughout the district. Reporting directly to the Kitchen Manager, the Receiving Kitchen Cook is responsible for a variety of food service tasks that encompass everything from meal preparation to sanitation and inventory management. This is a 9-month term position classified under salary classification 8, designed for those who are passionate about food service in a school setting and want to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of students. Starting with receiving deliveries, prepping ingredients, cooking entrees and sides, to ensuring cleanliness and safety standards, this role is essential in the smooth operation of school meal services.

Key responsibilities include working closely with kitchen management to plan food quantities, preparing meals according to standardized recipes, serving food to students, and assisting with cashier duties during meal times. The position demands knowledge of food safety regulations, effective customer service, basic math skills for recipe calculations, and the ability to use computer software for recording production details and logging temperatures daily. The Receiving Kitchen Cook also plays an integral role in maintaining kitchen hygiene by cleaning utensils, dining areas, and equipment thoroughly and efficiently after meal service.

Beyond daily cooking and serving duties, the role includes tasks such as inventory rotation, completing monthly supply inventories, and providing backup support to other kitchen staff members to ensure all cafeteria operations run seamlessly. The job may require flexibility in working hours and the capability to lift and carry heavy items, reflecting the physical nature of the tasks. Additionally, candidates must be prepared to obtain and maintain necessary certifications such as the State of Arizona Food Handlers Permit and the Peoria USD Cook Safety Certificate. The position may also involve background checks and fingerprint clearance as part of district employment requirements.

Job Requirements

  • must have a high school diploma or ged
  • six months of relevant food service or related experience preferred
  • must be able to obtain an ivp fingerprint clearance card and background check
  • must obtain and maintain a state of arizona food handlers permit within one month of employment
  • must obtain peoria usd cook safety certificate
  • must be able to work flexible hours including outside normal working hours
  • must be able to lift and carry supplies materials equipment and other items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • may be exposed to dangerous machinery physical harm hazardous chemicals and infectious disease
  • may require a valid arizona driver’s license

Job Qualifications

  • high school diploma or ged
  • six months of relevant food service or closely related experience preferred
  • any equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable knowledge skills and abilities have been achieved
  • skill in reading interpreting understanding and applying federal state county and city statutes rules regulations ordinances codes and pusd policies
  • skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with coworkers vendors students parents and the public
  • skill in basic addition subtraction and multiplication
  • ability to read recipes calculate measurements and follow instructions
  • skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications

Job Duties

  • work closely with the manager regarding how much to prepare pull from the freezer and any necessary advance preparation
  • perform a variety of food preparation tasks including reading and calculating recipes cutting chopping measuring and preparing food
  • prepare and cook entrees and accompanying vegetables
  • prepare the serving line fruit and vegetable bar condiments and beverages serve or cashier during meal times and assist customers
  • complete daily temperature log and production worksheets and provide backup with deposit preparation and end of day paperwork reconciliation
  • clean and sanitize kitchen food trays utensils floors work stations tables and cafeteria areas including mopping using the autoscrubber and taking out trash break down tables after service
  • provide backup and assistance in preparation serving clean-up and kitchen cafeteria maintenance
  • assist with receiving deliveries pulling food for preparation rotating food and supply inventory and complete monthly inventories
  • perform other duties as assigned or required
