Job Description

The School City of Hobart is a public school district dedicated to providing quality education and support services to its students and community. Within this district, the Early Learning Center at George Earle plays a vital role in the academic and social development of young learners. The district values excellence, diversity, and inclusivity in its operations and employment practices, ensuring equal opportunities for all candidates. As part of its commitment to student well-being and success, the district operates a comprehensive nutrition program adhering to rigorous standards for food safety, nutrition, and service quality.

The position of Kitchen Manager at the Early Learning Center at George Earle is a crucial role within the School City's Department of School Nutrition. This role involves managing the daily operations of a school kitchen and cafeteria, specifically overseeing food preparation, meal service, sanitation, inventory management, recordkeeping, and the supervision of assigned nutrition staff. The Kitchen Manager ensures that all meals are prepared and served not only efficiently but also safely, following school nutrition requirements and department guidelines.

This is a school-year position starting with the 2026-2027 school year, typically involving an eight-hour workday over 180 days per school year. The role is classified as non-exempt and offers an hourly pay rate of $18.00. In addition to a competitive salary, the position offers a broad range of benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, term life insurance, retirement plans, sick and personal days, and more. The job demands physical stamina for frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and equipment operation in a dynamic kitchen environment subject to fluctuating temperatures and fast-paced meal service periods.

The Kitchen Manager must maintain an organized, clean, and sanitary work environment, ensuring compliance with food safety guidelines such as HACCP and ServSafe protocols. Effective communication skills are essential for interaction with supervisors, staff, students, parents, vendors, and administrators. Advanced proficiency using technology for inventory, ordering, recordkeeping, and reporting enhances the efficiency of daily operations. Leadership capacity is also valuable as the Kitchen Manager oversees a team of assigned school nutrition staff and substitutes.

Overall, this position is perfect for a motivated individual with prior food service or school nutrition experience, a commitment to food safety and student welfare, and the ability to manage multiple kitchen functions while supporting a positive meal service environment. The School City of Hobart is an equal opportunity employer that values diversity, welcomes qualified minorities, and ensures a supportive workplace for all employees. Interested applicants must successfully complete district pre-employment requirements including background checks and drug screening.
