Job Description

The City of Oakland, known for its strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity, is a vibrant and culturally rich municipality located in the San Francisco Bay Area. With deep historical roots shaped by activism around issues of justice and community empowerment, Oakland values its diverse population and strives to create an inclusive work environment. The city's Human Services Department, particularly the Early Childhood and Family Services Division, plays a critical role in supporting local families and fostering community well-being. This division is dedicated to providing essential services that contribute positively to the lives of Oakland residents, working in a collaborative and passionate environment that embraces cultural richness and community values.

This specific role, Cook Supervising, offers a unique opportunity to be part of a dynamic team engaged in delivering quality meal services to large community groups within early childhood and family programs. The position focuses on leadership, food quality, safety, and operational efficiency in kitchen settings. Supervising cooks are responsible for managing kitchen teams, ensuring meals meet established quality and nutritional standards, and maintaining compliance with food safety regulations. The role demands excellent organizational skills, the ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment, and strong communication capabilities to coordinate with staff, vendors, and other personnel effectively.

Candidates will supervise a dedicated kitchen team of 3-4 employees, lead training, ensure proper food preparation and sanitation, manage inventory, and support administrative tasks like record-keeping and reporting. This position involves continuous interaction with the community the division serves, emphasizing food, culture, and collaboration. The role encourages innovation and values fresh perspectives that align with Oakland's values and commitment to public service.

Embracing challenges like meeting early morning production deadlines and adapting to dynamic food service demands, the Cook Supervising position also requires competencies such as decision-making, safety focus, adaptability, and professional technical expertise. The position is classified as an at-will exempt limited duration employee role, reinforcing the need for reliability and commitment.

Overall, joining the City of Oakland's Human Services Department means engaging in meaningful work that makes a real impact on the community, backed by a supportive team and a city-wide commitment to equity and inclusion.
