Job Description

The Kalispel Tribe of Indians is a respected sovereign tribal government committed to preserving Indigenous culture while promoting economic development and community well-being. The Tribe operates across various sectors, including hospitality and food services, providing vibrant employment opportunities within tribal lands. Among these opportunities is a position focused on culinary arts within the Tribe's food establishments, primarily serving guests in locations such as casino eateries and other eating venues on the property. This role represents a key component of the Tribe's efforts to ensure guests enjoy superior quality meals and service, reflecting Kalispel tradition and hospitality values.

The culinary position available is designed to prepare, season, and cook an array of foods including soups, meats, vegetables, desserts, and specialty dishes. The individual in this role will work within a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environment where food safety, presentation, and guest satisfaction are paramount. They will follow established recipes and food preparation controls to maintain consistency and quality. The job does not include supervisory responsibilities, focusing instead on hands-on food production and adherence to health standards. Employment is at-will and subject to drug testing and background checks as part of the Tribe's commitment to safety and integrity.

In this capacity, the employee will ensure compliance with internal controls specific to the Kalispel Tribal policies as well as federal standards such as those from the FDA, maintaining HACCP protocols. The position requires preparing food to strict specifications and frequently verifying quality through ongoing control checks before, during, and after food production. Food inventory rotation and sanitation best practices are critical daily functions, guaranteeing the highest food quality and safety for all guests. Participation in process improvement efforts within kitchen operations is expected to optimize efficiency and food outcomes.

The role supports the Sous Chef and Food and Beverage Manager by assisting in the preparation of specialty dishes and completing additional tasks as assigned by management. Flexibility in work hours is necessary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, adapting to business demand fluctuations. The employee may also serve as a panelist for internal review hearings when required, emphasizing the importance of adherence to internal policies and maintaining high operational standards.

Individuals suited for this role will have at least a high school diploma or equivalent and one year of related cooking experience or equivalent training, with a preference for those knowledgeable in high-volume cooking. They must be computer literate and comfortable with Microsoft programs and other software tools relevant to kitchen operations. The ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively across all organizational levels, and apply mathematical concepts related to food production are essential skills. Moreover, the candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Kalispel Tribal Work Permit and a Washington State Food Handler Permit soon after hire, along with required vaccinations.

Physical demands of the position include the ability to lift heavy objects, perform repetitive movements, and work in varying environmental conditions such as heat and noise typical to a casino setting. Vision requirements include the ability to distinguish colors and focus at different distances to ensure food presentation standards.

The Kalispel Tribe of Indians is an equal opportunity employer embracing Indian hiring preference in accordance with federal law, prioritizing tribal members and spouses before other applicants.
