Job Description
TeachStart is an innovative education-focused organization dedicated to addressing the ongoing teacher shortage by offering a unique earn-and-learn pathway for aspiring educators. Founded with the mission to create economic opportunity while supporting schools in need of qualified teachers, TeachStart combines meaningful career acceleration with comprehensive training and support. This pathway allows individuals interested in teaching to become full-time lead teachers in less than one year, while receiving full compensation and benefits during their entire training period.
As a full-time employee at TeachStart, fellows engage in a dynamic program that balances theoretical instruction with practical classroom experience. The TeachStart Fellowship is designed as a career accelerator that equips participants with foundational teaching skills through initial training, followed by work as substitute teachers. This hands-on experience is paired with ongoing coaching and credentialing support. Notably, TeachStart alleviates common barriers to entering the teaching profession by helping cover upfront costs such as substitute teacher permits and offering reduced fees for necessary coursework through its credentialing partner. This approach not only removes financial obstacles but also ensures a sustainable wage throughout the program.
The role of a TeachStart Fellow involves actively working in school environments while completing credential requirements. Fellows gain direct exposure to diverse student populations and varied teaching settings, cultivating the skills necessary to lead a classroom confidently. The program's supportive framework and community-focused ethos create an environment fostering both personal and professional growth. At the culmination of the fellowship, TeachStart supports fellows in securing full-time positions as lead teachers, empowering them to transition seamlessly into rewarding educational careers.
TeachStart values diversity, equity, and inclusion, reflecting a commitment to nurturing an inclusive workplace that celebrates varied perspectives and experiences. The organization also emphasizes the importance of balancing work and life, offering flexible scheduling to accommodate fellows during their training period. The program is full-time and non-exempt; fellows are compensated at a competitive salary of $45,000 per year, reflecting the crucial role they play in the education ecosystem.
In summary, TeachStart presents an exceptional opportunity for individuals who aspire to become educators but face traditional barriers in starting their careers. By integrating paid work experience with credentialing support and mentorship, TeachStart offers a clear, attainable path to a fulfilling teaching role. Becoming part of TeachStart means joining a mission-driven organization dedicated to making a societal impact through education, supporting your career growth, and ensuring you are fully prepared to thrive as a lead teacher.
