The Dryer & Packaging Operator role at Hilmar Cheese Company is a vital position responsible for the operation and maintenance of drying processes and associated packaging equipment. This full-time position involves working 12-hour variable shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed, with a salary range of USD 25.02 to 29.29 per hour. The operator plays a crucial role in ensuring that the drying and packaging procedures produce high-quality products meeting company specifications.

Key responsibilities include operating dryers to maintain product quality, managing packaging systems to ensure properly sealed and filled bags and totes, and upholding accurate production records. The role requires computer-related control skills, ongoing learning about drying equipment and protein processing, monitoring additives to maintain product functionality, and adherence to rigorous quality control and production standards. Operators are also tasked with maintaining equipment cleanliness, minimizing product loss, and following clean-in-place (CIP) and other cleaning protocols per plant procedures.

This position demands strict observance of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), company policies, and active participation in continuous training and development programs. The operator will coach and train teammates, engage in buddy training, and prioritize food safety and sanitation policies to prevent contamination risks. A safety-first approach is essential, including reporting safety issues and contributing to safety improvements.

Physically, the job requires standing and walking for most of the shift, manual handling of equipment and materials up to 60 pounds, and working in varying environments including heights and confined spaces. The ideal candidate is proficient in English, capable of multitasking in a dynamic manufacturing setting, and exhibits a strong commitment to safety and food quality.

Job Requirements

  • English skills must be proficient to understand, read, write and speak English
  • Must be able to work 12-hour variable shifts, including weekends, holidays and overtime as needed

  • Basic computer skills

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • SAP experience
  • Dairy manufacturing experience
  • Active or past member of departmental safety team
  • Skilled in packaging in a food manufacturing environment

Job Duties

  • Operation of the dryers to insure quality product that meets specifications
  • Operation of the packaging systems to insure adequately sealed and properly filled bags and totes
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete paperwork
  • Ability to learn and operate computer related controls
  • Ongoing improvement of knowledge and understanding of all dryer process equipment and protein in general
  • Monitoring of all additives to the retentate streams to insure the proper functionality of the various products
  • Maintain and monitor all QC and production programs per HCC standards
  • Responsible for maintaining equipment and work environment cleanliness
  • Responsible for proper product handling to insure minimum product loss
  • Responsible for understanding and conducting CIP’s and other cleaning steps according to plant procedures
  • Responsible for following GMP guidelines and all company policies as outlined in the employee handbook
  • Active participation and ownership in your training and development program and associated activities, classes and events, which will be held before, during, after shifts and during scheduled days off
  • Help coach and train teammates and participate in on the job, buddy training
  • Place high priority on food safety and sanitation by understanding and executing HCC’s food safety and sanitation policies and procedures
  • Prioritize safety above all other job duties by having a safety first approach at all times
  • This includes reporting any safety issues, observations, opportunities to your teams and follow up
