Job Description

The Escondido Corps, a local branch of The Salvation Army, is seeking a committed Program Assistant to join its team. This position plays a crucial role in supporting the operational and programmatic activities of the Corps. The Program Assistant will manage property maintenance, assist with program execution, maintain financial and program records, and ensure that all activities adhere to The Salvation Army's standards of stewardship and care. The role is multifaceted, involving hands-on responsibilities such as janitorial tasks, meal preparation, and vehicle upkeep, as well as administrative duties like data entry and reporting. In this role, the Program Assistant will be responsible for overseeing aspects of property management, from cleaning and maintenance to arranging equipment and furniture for various events and programs. They will coordinate the pickup and distribution of food donations, requiring physical stamina to lift substantial weights and operate Salvation Army vehicles safely. The position demands meticulous record-keeping to track donations, client data, and program outcomes, supporting both internal management and external reporting requirements. Weekly meal preparation and service are core functions, emphasizing hygiene, sanitation, and safety standards. Additionally, the Program Assistant supports the Corps' seasonal and special event activities, ensuring smooth operations and positive public engagement.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Valid California Driver’s License
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist intermittently or continuously
  • Willingness and ability to obtain food handler’s card
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead
  • Minimum five years of driving experience
  • Must meet certification and participate in The Salvation Army’s Fleet Safety Program
  • Ability to use multi-line network telephone system
  • Good communication skills
  • Must be in good physical and mental health

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Basic computer knowledge including Word, Publisher, and Excel
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish beneficial but not required
  • Ability to use multi-line network telephone system
  • Minimum five years of non-professional driving experience
  • Commitment to The Salvation Army’s Christian mission and ministry
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated with excellent communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to keep information confidential
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn new tasks including EDS and Canteen service
  • Knowledge of cooking and meal preparation for large groups

Job Duties

  • Assist in property management and maintenance including janitorial duties
  • Assist with moving tables, chairs, desks, and other furniture
  • Assist in property-related maintenance tasks such as replacing ceiling tiles and changing light bulbs
  • Pick up food donations requiring lifting of boxes up to 50 pounds and use of Salvation Army vehicles
  • Keep detailed logs of donations and assist with computer data entry for Feeding San Diego
  • Assist in weekly meal preparation, cooking, cleaning, and serving
  • Support financial and operational management including record keeping and ensuring stewardship of funds
  • Drive for programs including transporting food donations and program participants
  • Assist in weekly operations such as bank deposits and finance-related tasks
  • Support seasonal activities and programs such as Summer Camp and Christmas Assistance
  • Assist in weekly food assistance operations including food distribution and client interaction
  • Maintain proper records including statistical and financial data
  • Maintain good public relations and promote special events
  • Utilize basic computer skills including typing, Excel, and Word
  • Answer phones and interact with clients professionally
  • Help maintain vehicles including washing, oil changes, and fueling
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Meet physical demands of the job including lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Obtain food handler’s card and maintain valid California Driver’s License
  • Comply with Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program requirements
