Job Description
Vistar is a premier American distributor specializing in candy, snacks, and beverages, operating more than 25 distribution centers across the United States. As a part of Performance Food Group, Vistar delivers a diverse range of products from classic treats like popcorn to innovative healthy meal replacements, catering to various customer needs nationwide. Their success stems from their close relationships with suppliers and customers, allowing them to stay ahead of snacking trends and exceed customer expectations. This company prides itself on a culture of collaboration, integrity, teamwork, and community involvement. They are committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all individuals regardless of race, gender, age, or other protected characteristics.
The role of a commercial driver at Vistar is critical to maintaining their high-quality product delivery standards. This position involves operating tractor trailers or straight trucks both intrastate and interstate to deliver food and food-related products. The deliveries are made on local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, or overnight routes. Drivers must adhere to all company and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations to ensure safe and timely transit and delivery. The schedule is Monday through Friday, with shifts averaging 10 hours, and departures typically occurring between 3am and 5am. The role requires minimal physical product handling due to the mostly No Touch Freight policy, helping reduce physical strain on the driver.
Employees can benefit from a sign-on bonus of up to $10,000 paid out over a year. Overnight shifts are rare, usually limited to one per week depending on business demands. When overnight stays are required, drivers are provided safe accommodations and per diem allowances. The driver role includes completing thorough safety inspections of vehicles, loading and unloading products responsibly, maintaining clear records, and delivering exceptional customer service. Drivers interact professionally with customers, vendors, and colleagues, ensuring all duties are performed responsibly and accurately.
This role demands attention to detail, particularly in verifying the proper loading and securing of freight, completing required paperwork, conducting comprehensive safety checks, and maintaining cleanliness and organization of vehicles and equipment. Drivers must be prepared to perform physical tasks like hand-lifting items that typically weigh between 60 to 90 pounds using appropriate equipment such as two-wheelers, lift gates, or other lifting devices. Safety and compliance with all DOT and company protocols are paramount, along with maintaining a clean motor vehicle report, passing drug tests, and holding a valid CDL A license alongside other state certifications. Overall, this is an excellent opportunity for drivers who want to join a stable and respected distribution company with comprehensive benefits and a supportive team environment.
