Job Description
Vistar is America’s leading distributor specializing in candy, snacks, and beverages, with a robust network of over 25 distribution centers across the United States. Committed to serving a wide range of customers in various environments where people work, play, and shop, Vistar prides itself on delivering a comprehensive selection of products ranging from popcorn to healthy meal replacements. By fostering close partnerships with suppliers and customers, Vistar has established itself as a forward-thinking company that stays ahead of the latest snacking trends. This innovative approach not only ensures customer satisfaction but also reflects the company’s dedication to teamwork, integrity, and community involvement. Vistar’s work culture emphasizes collaboration and doing what is right, further supported by its commitment to equal employment opportunities and inclusivity.
This position is for a driver role with Vistar, focused on delivering food and food-related products through intrastate and interstate routes including local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight assignments. The role is predominantly no-touch freight, reducing physical strain and ensuring driver safety and wellbeing. Drivers work Monday through Friday, starting early in the morning between 3am and 5am with average 10-hour shifts. The schedule may occasionally require overnight stays up to once per week depending on business needs, offering per diem allowances and safe hotel accommodations for those overnight trips.
Responsibilities include operating tractor trailers or straight trucks adhering strictly to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety policies. Drivers perform mandatory safety checks including pre- and post-trip inspections to guarantee vehicle and trailer compliance with safety standards. The role demands precise handling of paperwork, freight counting, loading and unloading, customer communications, and secure handling of cargo. Drivers must maintain clear communication with supervisors and customers to ensure the accuracy and safety of all deliveries. This includes verifying deliveries, managing customer returns, collecting payments when necessary, and maintaining professional engagement at all times.
Beyond driving, the duty scope extends to keeping equipment and trailers clean, organizing the loading dock area, and performing general housekeeping to uphold operational standards. Daily driving hours must be logged accurately according to Federal DOT regulations, underscoring an emphasis on safety, compliance, and professionalism. The company offers up to a $10,000 sign-on bonus paid over one year as an added incentive for qualified candidates.
This opportunity is suited for experienced commercial drivers who hold a valid CDL A license and meet state licensing requirements. Candidates must be at least 21 years old, have a clean motor vehicle report for the past three years, and successfully pass pre-employment drug and road tests. A current DOT Health Card or eligibility to obtain one is also required. The physical demands include the ability to lift and handle freight ranging from 60 to 90 pounds using appropriate equipment such as two-wheelers or lift gates. Vistar values drivers’ contributions in maintaining safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction as part of their dynamic, welcoming team.
