Job Description
Vistar is the premier distributor in the United States specializing in the delivery of candy, snacks, and beverages. With over 25 strategically located distribution centers across the country, Vistar operates as a leading company in the food distribution industry. The organization prides itself on its ability to provide a diverse range of products from popcorn to healthy meal replacements, meeting the demands of customers who work, play, and shop in various environments nationwide. Vistar's success is deeply rooted in its strong relationships with suppliers and customers, enabling the company to stay ahead of the latest snacking trends. This customer-centric approach is complemented by a culture of innovation and teamwork that drives continuous improvement. Vistar promotes values such as doing what is right and giving back to the communities where it operates, creating a positive impact beyond its business activities.
This role of a commercial truck driver at Vistar is an intrastate and interstate driving position, involving the operation of either tractor trailers or straight trucks. The job includes performing deliveries on local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight routes, with a schedule that features four-day routes and weekends off, specifically three days on the road and one day local. The primary responsibility of the driver is to safely and efficiently transport various food and food-related products for timely delivery to customers while complying with all company policies as well as Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
The driver is expected to carry out comprehensive safety inspections before and after trips to ensure the vehicle complies with regulatory standards and company safety requirements. Maintenance and reporting of any safety issues or repairs are essential parts of the role to maintain operational safety. In addition to driving, the role involves loading and unloading freight, verifying shipment accuracy through product and invoice checks, and ensuring merchandise is securely loaded and transported. Drivers are also accountable for managing paperwork related to deliveries, such as completing transaction records and maintaining detailed logs. Customer service is an integral aspect of the job, requiring professional interactions with customers, vendors, and coworkers to uphold high standards of service.
This position demands physical capability, including the ability to hand-lift and use equipment such as two-wheelers and lift gates to move and stack product cases that can weigh between 60 and 90 pounds. The driver must also handle cash or check transactions for deliveries when necessary and safely store trailers and freight when not in transit. Additional duties include general housekeeping, unloading damaged goods, and trash removal from trailers, ensuring the workspace remains clean and orderly.
Vistar’s commercial driver role is integral to the company’s supply chain, contributing directly to customer satisfaction and operational success. The position offers a structured schedule promoting work-life balance by providing weekends off and a clear distribution of route types. Vistar is committed to equal employment opportunity, fostering an inclusive workplace that values diversity and compliance with all applicable employment laws. This role is ideal for a responsible, safety-conscious individual who enjoys driving and providing excellent customer service within a supportive and well-established organization.
