The role of the Driver, Hourly CDL-A, is a critical position within Vistar's food supply chain network. This position offers a local and regional route schedule from Monday through Friday, with early morning dispatch times, making it an ideal opportunity for individuals seeking consistent weekday work. As a Driver, Hourly CDL-A, you will play an essential role in ensuring that food and food-related products reach their destinations promptly and in excellent condition. The job requires operating tractor-trailers or straight trucks safely and in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Your responsibilities will include performing detailed safety inspections of vehicles, securing and loading freight, delivering orders on predetermined routes, unloading products at customer locations, and maintaining accurate delivery documentation. Additionally, drivers will interact professionally with customers, vendors, and coworkers, representing the face of Vistar and building long-term relationships.

This position requires adherence to safety protocols, thorough record-keeping of hours and deliveries, and active participation as a contributing member of the team. Furthermore, you will be expected to perform routine housekeeping tasks such as trailer and dock area maintenance, equipment security, and waste management. The role is demanding, requiring the ability to handle freight of varying weights using equipment like lift gates and two-wheelers, typically handling items between 10 to 35 pounds and occasionally heavier loads.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent
  • 1+ years commercial driving experience
  • Valid CDL-A license
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Meet all state licensing and/or certification requirements where applicable
  • Clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for the past 3 years
  • Pass post offer drug test and criminal background check
  • Pass road test
  • Attain or have valid current DOT Health Card or be able to secure a new DOT Health Card
  • Able to hand-lift and utilize equipment such as two-wheeler, lift gate, and other tools to move and stack products of varying size and weight

Job Duties

  • Performs all required safety checks including pre and post trip inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
  • Inspects tractor/truck and trailer to ensure they meet company safety standards and takes appropriate action as needed
  • Reports all safety issues and/or repairs required
  • Follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
  • Immediately reports all safety hazards
  • Inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
  • Performs count check of items and checks customer invoices of loaded products
  • Completes all required paperwork associated with freight accurately and legibly
  • Moves tractor to loading dock and attaches preloaded trailer as needed
  • Drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
  • Unloads products from trailers and transports items to designated customer storage areas
  • Performs damage control checks on items, scans and contacts supervisor about removing orders according to company policy
  • Verifies delivery of items with customer and obtains proper signatures
  • Collects money where required
  • Loads customer returns onto trailer and secures trailer doors
  • Ensures tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and secured
  • Unloads damaged goods and customer returns and completes necessary paperwork
  • Performs general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keeps trailers clear and clean
  • Completes daily record of hours of service and enters logs in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
