Job Description
Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) is a comprehensive public school district committed to academic excellence and the holistic development of its students. Situated in Grand Rapids, Michigan, GRPS serves a diverse population and is dedicated to creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment that fosters the growth of all students into educated, self-directed, and productive members of society. The district operates a number of schools and support facilities, including a dedicated Nutrition Services Department responsible for providing healthful meals to students across its campuses. The department plays a vital role in ensuring that all children receive nutritious food each school day, contributing to their overall wellbeing and academic success.
The role of Driver – Food and Nutrition Services within GRPS is essential to the operational efficiency of the district's nutrition program. This position is part of the Grand Rapids Educational Support Professionals Association (GRESPA) bargaining unit, and compensation aligns with the collective bargaining agreement in place. The driver is entrusted with the responsibility to manage various operational duties related to food delivery and storage across the district's schools. Daily, the driver ensures timely delivery of food and supplies to schools, which is critical for maintaining the smooth functioning of meal service programs.
Additionally, this role entails coordination duties including scheduling driver absences and working with substitutes to maintain uninterrupted service, managing and organizing records as required by the Food and Nutrition Services office, and scheduling routine maintenance for delivery vehicles and equipment to ensure their reliable operation. The position requires proficiency in ordering supplies through online computer systems, inventory control following strict HACCP standards for food safety, and maintaining high sanitation and safety standards in all working areas.
The driver also plays a collaborative role by coordinating closely with the Nutrition Center Manager regarding shipping, receiving, and production activities, supporting the kitchen with production supplies, and assisting with specialized programs like the summer meal service. This job demands an individual who is highly dependable, able to work independently, demonstrates leadership and teamwork capabilities, and possesses exceptional attention to safety detail and hygiene standards. The work environment is primarily indoors with moderate noise levels but includes physical demands such as lifting up to 50 pounds and performing various physical activities like walking, standing, and climbing. The role offers the opportunity to engage with multiple stakeholders including school administrators, staff, parents, and community members, in a positive and supportive manner.
As part of a diverse and inclusive district, GRPS is committed to equal employment opportunity and making reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities to perform essential job functions. The position requires a valid Michigan driver's license with a good driving record and prefers candidates with experience operating large vehicles and familiarity with computer-based ordering systems. If you are motivated to contribute to the well-being of students through effective logistical support in nutrition services, this Driver role offers a meaningful career path within the Grand Rapids Public Schools system.
