Job Description
Saba Grocers Initiative is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Oakland, California, dedicated to improving access to fresh fruits and vegetables for underserved communities within the city. Focusing on collaboration with corner store owners, Saba Grocers works to make nutritious, affordable produce available to all residents, especially in areas commonly referred to as "food deserts" where traditional grocery stores are scarce and healthy food options are limited. The Initiative partners with marginalized and BIPOC farmers to support small-scale agriculture, fostering economic growth and sustainability while addressing food insecurity in Oakland's neighborhoods. This mission-driven approach combines community engagement, local business development, and food equity to create a healthier environment for residents.
The organization operates a food hub at the Jack London Produce Terminal that serves as an aggregation point linking small and mid-sized farms to consistent markets through effective logistics and infrastructure. Within this food hub, the Driver & Produce Coordinator plays a crucial role in the weekly produce cycle that includes purchasing, receiving, quality checking, packing, and delivering fresh produce. This full-time, onsite/hybrid position is based in Oakland and offers $32 per hour. It requires flexibility to adapt to variable delivery schedules including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, with core work hours from Monday to Wednesday morning.
As a core member of the Saba team, the Driver & Produce Coordinator ensures that fresh produce moves efficiently and safely from farms to corner stores, maintaining quality at every touchpoint. The role emphasizes safe operation of refrigerated trucks, precise purchasing and inventory receiving, and rigorous quality control to uphold produce freshness and condition. The position also involves physical tasks such as lifting and packing while supporting overall food hub operations. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License to contribute to community health and sustainable food systems. Saba values diversity, inclusion, and equity, welcoming candidates from all backgrounds and particularly encouraging those from underrepresented groups to apply.
