The role of Kitchen Helper / Driver supports the Nourished Neighbors Food Program, which is focused on alleviating food insecurity among individuals and families by delivering nutritious, high-quality meals in a timely and respectful manner. This part-time position, located in East Orange, NJ, offers a $20 per hour wage and includes a $250 sign-on bonus upon hire. The work schedule includes daytime hours, with some evenings and weekends as needed to meet community needs.
In this role, the Kitchen Helper / Driver will assist in food preparation, packaging, and kitchen sanitation to ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations. Key responsibilities include managing inventory, preparing meals according to program guidelines, and supporting special food projects and community events. A crucial component of the job involves safely transporting meals and food supplies to community distribution sites and partner agencies. The position requires ensuring the proper loading and unloading of delivery items, conducting basic vehicle inspections, maintaining accurate delivery documentation, and providing courteous and trauma-informed service to clients and community partners.
This role also involves supporting on-site food distributions and pantry operations, assisting with volunteer coordination, and participating in agency training and meetings. Adherence to agency policies and compliance with relevant funder, licensing, and regulatory requirements is essential. The ideal candidate must demonstrate reliability, punctuality, strong time management, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Flexibility to work various shifts, including occasional evenings and weekends, is necessary.
The physical demands of this role include the ability to sit for extended periods, bend, lift, walk, and carry up to 50 pounds. Experience or certification in operating material-handling equipment such as forklifts or pallet jacks is preferred. Job Duties
- Assist with meal preparation, food packaging, and portioning according to program guidelines
- Support inventory management, including receiving, storing, and rotating food supplies
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen areas, equipment, and storage spaces
- Follow all food safety, hygiene, and health regulations
- Assist with special food preparation projects and community events as needed
- Safely transport meals, groceries, and supplies to distribution sites, partner agencies, and community locations
- Load, unload, and organize food items for delivery
- Conduct basic vehicle inspections and report maintenance needs
- Maintain accurate delivery logs and documentation
- Ensure timely and professional service to community members and partners
- Provide courteous, respectful, and trauma-informed service to clients and community partners
- Assist with on-site food distributions and pantry operations
- Support volunteer coordination and set-up/clean-up activities
- Communicate operational issues to supervisors in a timely manner
- Adhere to agency policies, safety standards, and risk management procedures
- Follow proper handling procedures for perishable and non-perishable foods
- Support compliance with funder, licensing, and regulatory requirements
- Participate in required trainings and staff meetings
