Job Description
The Salvation Army is a globally recognized charitable organization dedicated to providing assistance and support to individuals and families in need. With a long history of community service, the Salvation Army operates various programs aimed at addressing critical social issues such as poverty, homelessness, and hunger. The organization thrives on its commitment to improve the quality of life for vulnerable populations through compassionate outreach and practical services. Serving communities through multiple channels including food banks, shelters, and rehabilitation programs, the Salvation Army plays an essential role in fostering social welfare and community development.
This particular role is that of a driver responsible for operating a Salvation Army vehicle to transport passengers safely to and from various Salvation Army activities and appointments. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., comprising a full-time 35-hour workweek. In this capacity, the driver supports the organization by ensuring reliable transportation for clients, volunteers, and staff. This includes transportation for weekly food bank donations, client appointments, and other agency visits. The driver is also tasked with loading and unloading donations, delivering miscellaneous items, and managing mail pickups and deliveries.
Safety is paramount in this position. The driver must exercise caution and obey all traffic regulations to safeguard passengers and protect the vehicle. The position also requires physical tasks such as managing cargo and operating in various weather conditions. The driver may be required to spend nights away from home during extended trips, indicating the need for flexibility and dedication.
The role demands a combination of skills, including a valid state driver’s license, the ability to read maps, good time management, and excellent communication skills in English. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with at least two years experience operating a vehicle or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary abilities. The work environment includes exposure to traffic and weather challenges, requiring alertness and adaptability.
In return for this vital contribution, the Salvation Army offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance; paid time off and holiday pay; life insurance; and retirement plans, among others. The organization emphasizes equal employment opportunities for veterans and individuals with disabilities, reflecting its commitment to diversity and inclusion.
This driving position is integral to the mission of the Salvation Army, ensuring that resources and clients are moved efficiently and safely, thus maintaining the smooth operation of the organization’s many support activities. It offers a meaningful way to contribute to community welfare while working with a respected humanitarian organization.
