Job Description
Red Rabbit is the largest Black-owned K-12 School Food Management Company in the United States, dedicated to uplifting communities of color through nutritious, culturally relevant school meals. Founded in 2005 and MWBE-certified, Red Rabbit serves hundreds of schools, districts, and food banks across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, including Greater New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. The company specializes in creating menus crafted by professionally trained chefs who use farm-fresh ingredients to prepare scratch-made meals that honor the heritage and cultural identity of Black and Latino communities. Red Rabbit is committed not only to promoting good health but also to fostering dignity, representation, and opportunity through school food programs.
This commitment is reflected in their innovative approach to school food service, which goes beyond mere meal delivery to becoming an integral part of the school community. Red Rabbit’s chefs work both in commissary kitchens and onsite cafeterias, ensuring high standards of food quality, safety, and cultural relevance. The company emphasizes farm-to-table and scratch cooking methods, prioritizing fresh, nutritious ingredients over processed alternatives. Red Rabbit’s dedication to cultural affirmation ensures that the children served can see themselves represented in the meals they enjoy daily, which is vital for their emotional and social development.
The District Manager role at Red Rabbit offers a unique opportunity to lead and inspire onsite culinary teams within this transformative organization. Based in Washington, DC, this full-time position is central to managing and uplifting the company’s regional kitchen operations staffed by 2-4 Head Chefs and 10-20 kitchen workers. The District Manager will be pivotal in fostering a cohesive team culture centered on service excellence and affirming the cultural heritage of the students served. This leadership role combines operational management, customer service, and administrative duties, requiring a culinary background and proven experience in managing dynamic teams. The individual will act as the key liaison between Red Rabbit and school administrators to ensure meals are culturally relevant, nutritious, safe, and enjoyed by students.
Beyond leadership duties, the District Manager will oversee kitchen organization, food safety, inventory management, and compliance with health regulations such as DOH, CACFP, and NSLP. They will be responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness and efficiency while managing budgets and food costs. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while traveling between locations in the Philadelphia area. The role offers a competitive salary ranging from $60,000 to $75,000 and includes generous benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, 401k options, professional development opportunities, and family leave.
In summary, this position is ideal for a skilled culinary professional who is passionate about making a meaningful impact through food, community engagement, and leadership. Red Rabbit values creativity, problem-solving abilities, and cultural awareness, making it an inspiring workplace for those dedicated to transforming school dining experiences for children from diverse backgrounds.
