The Distribution Engineering Supervisor role based on the island of Oahu, Hawaii offers an exciting leadership opportunity for professionals passionate about electric utility design engineering. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to delivering exceptional design quality on every project, regardless of complexity. This position involves leading a team of 5-8 engineers in developing design and construction work packages for overhead and underground electrical distribution systems operating at voltages ranging from 4kV through 138kV. Projects often involve critical programmatic work such as upgrading overloaded transformers, conducting maintenance inspections, joint use projects, grid hardening, substation optimizations, and streetlight installations.

The supervisor will oversee all aspects of project development, utilizing tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Aided Design (CAD), and Work Management Systems (WMS). Responsibilities include managing day-to-day assignments, providing technical leadership, training junior engineers and designers, and coordinating with clients to ensure scope, schedule, and budget adherence. The role requires a strong focus on compliance with safety standards and quality expectations, from initial permitting through to construction support and post-construction reviews.

Job Requirements

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in distribution engineering
  • Experience with NESC Standards
  • Proficiency with MicroStation or AutoCAD and Bluebeam or Adobe
  • Proven experience designing electrical distribution systems for overhead, underground, or URD environments
  • Experience with ESRI and GIS a plus
  • Proficiency in distribution design tools such as O-Calc and SAG10
  • Knowledge of BOUD, Pole Foreman, and Spida-Calc tools desirable
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to review engineer designs with attention to detail
  • Experience monitoring scopes and tracking work progress
  • Prior team leadership experience preferred
  • Willingness to perform both field and office work
  • Ability to utilize personal vehicle

Job Duties

  • Lead team of engineers to develop design and construction work packages for electrical distribution systems
  • Oversee day-to-day assignments for direct reports
  • Provide technical leadership for engineers and designers including engineering calculations and constructability concerns
  • Train junior engineers, designers, and technicians
  • Maintain project scope, schedule, and budget under Engineering Manager oversight
  • Review client work and assess scope requirements
  • Communicate work progress, technical issues, and schedules with clients
  • Comply with safety and quality standards
  • Develop permitting documents and coordinate with permit agencies and third-party owners
  • Travel to sites and customer meetings as needed
  • Perform engineering calculations such as structural analysis, guying calculations, conductor sag and tension specifications, voltage drop, and flicker
  • Conduct QAQC reviews of engineering work for client submittal
  • Provide engineering support during and after construction
  • Conduct root cause analysis of outages and implement mitigation designs
