Job Description
Greensboro Urban Ministry is a well-established nonprofit organization based in Guilford County, North Carolina, dedicated to addressing homelessness and hunger within the local community. Founded in 1967, it operates with the mission of expressing the love of God to neighbors in need by providing food, shelter, and sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by those experiencing poverty and housing instability. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Greensboro Urban Ministry relies on community support, partnerships, and dedicated staff to fulfill its commitment to improving lives. The organization values compassion, inclusivity, and collaboration, working alongside faith communities, government entities, and other nonprofit organizations to strengthen the community’s safety net.
This role is a part-time Dishwasher/Utility Worker position within Greensboro Urban Ministry’s Potter's House Community Kitchen. Reporting directly to the Director of Potter’s House, this role is critical in supporting kitchen operations to ensure the effective preparation and clean-up of meals served to residents and visitors. Working approximately 20-25 hours per week during weekday and weekend shifts from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the Dishwasher/Utility Worker will assist the chef, staff, and volunteers by maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen, washing dishes, and supporting meal preparation. The Potter’s House is an active environment that requires flexibility, compassion, and the ability to work cooperatively with a diverse group of individuals.
The position involves essential duties such as washing pots, pans, dishes, and kitchen equipment, sweeping and mopping floors, assisting in the dining room and takeout window, and managing inventory of stock supplies. Beyond the physical demands, this role requires a genuine respect for all clients, staff, and volunteers, aligning strongly with Greensboro Urban Ministry’s mission statement which emphasizes compassion and dignity for all. Employees in this role contribute to a welcoming and safe atmosphere within the community kitchen and foster a spirit of generosity and service.
Working conditions for this position include exposure to varied kitchen temperatures and the use of standard kitchen and cleaning equipment. Successful candidates must demonstrate the physical capacity to perform tasks such as lifting, bending, sweeping, and standing for extended periods. Preferred candidates will have at least a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in food service or kitchen environments, although this is not a strict requirement. Flexible availability for shifts and a strong commitment to serving others are essential characteristics for anyone applying.
Greensboro Urban Ministry is an equal opportunity employer, committed to upholding a harassment-free and inclusive work environment that respects diversity across various protected classes. This position provides a meaningful opportunity for those looking to be part of a community-driven mission to address critical social issues through hands-on work in a supportive setting. If you are interested in making a tangible difference in the lives of neighbors in need through dedicated service and teamwork, the role of Dishwasher/Utility Worker at the Potter’s House Community Kitchen may be a perfect fit.
