Job Description
New Narrative is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental health and community care through compassionate and equitable support. Located in Portland, Oregon, and serving the surrounding metro areas, New Narrative is committed to fostering healing, housing stability, and long-term wellness for individuals by partnering closely with the community. Their mission emphasizes the importance of accessible mental health care as an integral part of community care, making a positive impact through direct programs and supportive services.
The organization is currently seeking a dedicated Prep Cook to join their commercial kitchen team. This role is essential to ensuring a clean, safe, and efficient kitchen environment, which supports the wider catering operations of New Narrative. The position offers a full-time schedule from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with a starting pay rate of $21.50 per hour, which may increase depending on experience. The Prep Cook will work closely with Cooks and the Catering Manager to prepare meals, maintain sanitation standards, and help uphold safety regulations. This role is perfect for someone passionate about contributing to a nonprofit's mission while applying their food service skills in a dynamic, community-focused setting.
The Prep Cook's primary responsibilities include maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen environment, washing dishes promptly, and ensuring that all food storage areas comply with hygiene standards. They will assist with food preparation tasks such as wrapping, storage, and supporting meal production with teamwork, while safely handling kitchen tools and equipment. Candidates should expect a physically active role requiring prolonged standing, walking, and the ability to lift heavy items safely, sometimes with assistance. The ability to perform repetitive movements and manage fast-paced work conditions efficiently is necessary.
Safety is a key focus in this role, requiring adherence to established kitchen safety protocols, proper handling of sharp objects like knives, and the careful use of cleaning agents. Communication skills are also important for coordinating with other team members, management, and consumers to maintain a positive work atmosphere. The Prep Cook will be responsible for daily cleaning duties, including cleaning surfaces, kitchen equipment, and floors, as well as completing closing tasks to ensure the kitchen is ready for the next shift.
This role demands discipline in following schedules and reporting any deviations ahead of time to supervisors. Flexibility to undertake other assigned tasks promptly and adherence to all organizational policies and procedures are expected. Candidates must be able to pass a criminal background check, hold and maintain an Oregon Food Handler's Card, and have previous experience in the food service industry. Demonstrated knife skills and the ability to safely handle sharp kitchen instruments are also required.
Joining New Narrative means becoming part of a team that values community impact, equity, and wellness. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the organization's mission while developing culinary skills within a nonprofit setting that prioritizes supportive and inclusive community care.
