Job Description
Amherst College, a prestigious liberal arts college located in Amherst, Massachusetts, is renowned for its commitment to academic excellence and fostering a diverse and inclusive community. As one of the leading institutions among highly selective liberal arts colleges, Amherst has taken a proactive leadership role in diversifying its student body across various dimensions including race, socio-economic background, and geographic origin. This dedication extends beyond the student population, as the College actively seeks to enrich its educational and cultural environment through the varied experiences and perspectives of its faculty, administration, and staff.
Amherst College is currently seeking a full-time Dishroom Attendant to join its Dining Services team. This year-round position plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and operational efficiency necessary for the smooth functioning of kitchen and service areas within the College’s dining facilities. The expected salary range for the Dishroom Attendant role is $19.64 to $20.00 per hour, with the exact offer depending on relevant education, training, experience, and other nondiscriminatory factors. Amherst offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of its employees and their families, underscoring the institution’s commitment to supporting its workforce.
As a Dishroom Attendant, you will be an essential member of the Dining Services team responsible for ensuring that all dishes, utensils, cookware, and service ware are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized according to health and safety standards. This support role requires proficient operation of dishwashing equipment and adherence to workplace safety protocols, including the correct use and storage of cleaning chemicals and personal protective equipment. The Dishroom Attendant helps to sustain a safe, sanitary, and welcoming dining environment for a diverse university community, working collaboratively with culinary and service staff.
The role demands flexibility in scheduling, including the possibility of working evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts to meet the operational needs of Amherst’s dining services. In addition to cleaning and sanitation duties, the position may involve supporting kitchen and service operations by performing light food preparation tasks and ensuring workflow efficiency during service periods. Furthermore, the Dishroom Attendant may provide guidance and basic supervision to student employees or temporary staff, contributing to a collaborative and efficient workplace.
Employees in this position are expected to embrace Amherst College’s rigorous food safety and allergen prevention protocols to safeguard the health and well-being of students, guests, and colleagues. Training is mandatory, and individuals must demonstrate the ability to implement safe practices consistently while communicating openly about any operational or safety concerns. This role is ideal for candidates who thrive in fast-paced, high-volume environments and who are motivated to contribute to an inclusive, team-oriented culture while maintaining stringent sanitation standards.
