Job Description
Mary's Place is a renowned organization dedicated to providing safe and inclusive shelter as well as supportive services for women, children, and families on their path out of homelessness. Operating multiple 24/7 family centers and shelters across King County, Mary's Place is committed to ensuring that no child has to sleep outside. The organization's core operations extend beyond providing shelter to include offering essential amenities such as food, showers, clothing, and access to critical housing and employment resources. This multi-faceted support system helps families stay together during difficult times and aids in transitioning them toward stable living situations.
Mary's Place champions diversity and equity, fostering a culturally rich and supportive work environment. As an equal opportunity employer, the organization promotes social justice and inclusivity in all aspects of its operations. The organizational culture reflects a deep commitment to the community and to those they serve, creating an environment where staff are empowered to contribute meaningfully to the mission.
The current opening is for a Dish/Prep Cook position, a vital role within the Food Services team that reports directly to the Food Services Chef/Manager. This full-time, non-exempt role is based at the downtown Seattle site and offers a schedule from Tuesday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a competitive hourly wage starting at $25.00 per hour, depending on experience. The Dish/Prep Cook plays a crucial role in supporting the kitchen operations by handling dishwashing duties, assisting with food preparation—such as chopping, slicing, dicing, and portioning meals—and maintaining cleanliness and organization in the dish room.
The role requires a compassionate and motivated individual eager to assist in creating nutritious and delicious meals for women and families experiencing homelessness. The cook helps sort and organize food donations while supporting operations staff with various tasks to ensure the kitchen meets and exceeds health and safety standards. Beyond technical skills, the ideal candidate is expected to embody the mission and values of Mary's Place, demonstrating a calm demeanor and positive behavior as part of a collaborative team. Participation in trainings and adherence to all sanitation procedures are key to success in this position. The job demands strong organizational and communication skills and an ability to adapt flexibly to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Mary’s Place not only focuses on the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness but also seeks to empower its employees through a supportive work environment and comprehensive benefits. Benefits include fully paid core employee medical and dental insurance, life insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan with employer matching, an ORCA transit pass, paid time off including PTO, sick days, and flexible holidays, as well as access to an Employee Assistance Program. These perks underline the organization’s commitment to the well-being and professional growth of its team members. Overall, this opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about food service who want to make a tangible difference in the community by supporting vulnerable populations within a values-driven, inclusive workplace.
