Job Description

RISD Dining is the in-house dining and catering program of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), an esteemed institution known for fostering creativity and innovation in art and design education. RISD Dining is committed to delivering exceptional hospitality while supporting local farms through seasonally-inspired menus. The program uses the strengths of its staff to provide outstanding culinary artistry to the greater community, enhancing the dining experience with a focus on quality, sustainability, and community engagement. The role available is for a part-time Dish Room Attendant, an essential member of the RISD Dining team. This position is crucial for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the dishwashing area as well as ensuring the dish machine operates correctly in compliance with established procedures. Dish Room Attendants play a vital role in supporting the overall success of dining and catering services by keeping the dish room organized, the equipment well-maintained, and the surrounding areas clean and safe. This position typically involves working approximately 25 hours per week with different schedules during the academic year and summer. Despite being part-time, the role is integral to the functioning of the dining program and staff are considered essential personnel, required to work even when the school is closed.

The job includes operational duties such as managing the dishwashing process, cleaning kitchen equipment, managing inventory of serving items, and maintaining kitchen and dining area cleanliness. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Ability to work approximately 25 hours per week with flexibility during academic and summer schedules
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adhere to sanitation and safety standards
  • Available to work even when the school is closed as essential personnel
  • Willingness to perform physical tasks such as lifting, cleaning, and standing for extended periods
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background screening
  • Submission of resume required, cover letter preferred

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Previous experience in food service preferred with knowledge of dish machine operations, skills to properly clean and sanitize kitchen areas and equipment
  • Ability to read, write and follow written instructions is helpful

Job Duties

  • Manage the dish room and washing of all dishes, flatware and trays, storing in proper places and frequently replenishing items in serving areas
  • Clean dish washing machine including emptying scrap trays and filters, hosing down insides and load and unload areas, removing dividers and cleaning, and grease trap
  • Clean scrap tables, belt, and disposal after each meal period
  • Sweep and mop floors in dish room
  • Clean pots, pans and other food preparation equipment
  • Assist in prompt removal of empty boxes, packaging materials and trash containers from kitchen
  • Sweep and mop kitchen and dining room floors when required
  • Check and restock beverage coolers and convenience items
  • Hook up fountain soda, juice, and CO2
  • Clean milk, soda, and juice machines
