Job Description
The Newark Board of Education is a pivotal educational authority dedicated to fostering academic excellence, community engagement, and operational efficiency within Newark, New Jersey. Serving as a central figure in the educational landscape of one of the state's most vibrant cities, the district oversees a comprehensive range of public schools and programs that aim to nurture student achievement and support the professional growth of educators and staff. The Board is committed to creating an equitable, inclusive environment that embraces diversity and promotes innovative educational practices to prepare students for success in an ever-evolving world. Located at 765 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey, the Board operates under the leadership of Superintendent Roger León, who guides the district's mission to deliver high-quality education alongside robust administrative and operational functions.
The Director of Operations and Special Activities (Superintendent Support, Initiatives, Events, and Engagement) is a key non-union management position within the Newark Board of Education. This role is intricately involved in the strategic planning, operational coordination, and execution of major district-wide initiatives and student-centered events. Acting as the primary lead for the successful management and operationalization of large-scale events and activities, the Director ensures smooth collaboration across multiple schools, departments, external partners, and community stakeholders.
This position offers executive-level operational support to the Superintendent, with responsibilities including organizing high-profile district events such as graduations, student recognition ceremonies, school openings, and community engagement initiatives. The Director plays a critical role in aligning these activities with district goals, ensuring events are delivered with excellence, safety, fiscal responsibility, and efficiency. The Director manages complex logistics, coordinates cross-departmental efforts, and supervises external partnerships with elected officials, community organizations, and academic institutions.
Additionally, the position requires managing budgets, procurement, vendor contracts, and compliance with district policies and safety regulations. Responsibilities include troubleshooting school-based operations and serving as the Superintendent’s designee when appropriate. The role demands exceptional organizational skills, strong communication, discretion, and the ability to operate flexibly including evenings and weekends as district events necessitate.
The employment term is a twelve-month calendar year with a salary range of $140,000 to $165,000. The Newark Board of Education provides comprehensive benefits including medical and prescription drug plans, employer-paid dental and vision coverage, wellness programs, and paid time off encompassing personal, sick, and vacation days for full-time staff. The Board is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, committed to attracting and retaining a diverse and talented workforce. Applications are accepted electronically from June 3, 2026, through June 16, 2026, or until the position is filled. Overall, this role offers an exciting opportunity for experienced professionals to contribute significantly to the educational and community engagement landscape of Newark by leading critical operations and special activities for the district.
