Job Description
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) is a globally recognized academic medical center dedicated to providing superior patient care, advancing research, and cultivating education. Among its notable establishments is The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, one of the nation's top ten freestanding cancer-only hospitals. The James stands out as the only cancer program in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) comprehensive cancer center designation while also being aligned with a highly ranked academic medical center on the campus of one of the nation’s largest public universities. This unique combination enables The James to deliver pioneering cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation services to the community and region it serves.
The Facilities Operations Management and Services Department at The James is tasked with overseeing all operational functions that support high-quality patient care across the hospital’s primary and managed outpatient sites. These sites include specialized centers such as the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center and outpatient care facilities at West Campus, Powell, and the Bob Crane Community Center. Additionally, administrative operations are managed for facilities including the Ackerman Complex and Polaris Innovation Centre. The department leadership team works closely with various OSUWMC support services such as Security, Environmental Services, Supply Chain, Health Facilities Planning, IT, and Facilities Design and Construction, ensuring seamless integration and operational excellence across the entire institution.
The role of Director James Operations - Facilities & Planning is central to the Facilities Operations Management and Services Department. This strategic leadership position involves managing a wide portfolio of clinical space optimization projects across The James facilities, which span over 2.06 million square feet at eight primary locations. The scope includes managing approximately 80 active construction projects with budgets from $5,000 to $2 billion, ensuring that all work aligns with the hospital’s strategic priorities and operational needs. These projects underpin critical hospital functions supporting more than 15,000 inpatient stays, nearly 488,000 outpatient visits, thousands of surgeries and complex treatments annually.
With The James poised to expand its facility to nearly 3 million square feet within five years, this role will support initiatives such as bed expansion that will make it the second largest cancer hospital in the United States. Key projects under the Director's oversight include four new operating rooms, relocations of interventional radiology suites, lobby redesigns to enhance patient satisfaction, and integration of advanced building systems like pneumatic tubes, telemetry, and autonomous guided vehicles. Additionally, the Director will be instrumental in executing a major 500,000 square foot expansion of the James Outpatient Care West Campus and in integrating cancer clinical operations across Health System Ambulatory locations and partner facilities.
This position requires a highly skilled professional with expertise in project and program management, resource planning, process improvement, and operational oversight. The Director will directly influence the delivery of exceptional patient care by improving facility workflows, managing change effectively, and ensuring compliance with stringent regulatory standards including those from The Joint Commission and CMS. Strategic planning, communication facilitation, and leadership in multidisciplinary committee settings are critical to success in this role. Reporting to the Senior Director of Operations, Support Services at The James, with potential matrixed responsibilities to Health Systems Facilities leadership, the Director will be a key contributor to the hospital's mission of excellence and innovation in cancer care.
