Job Description
Stanford Health Care (SHC) is a premier healthcare institution located in the heart of Silicon Valley, dedicated to healing humanity through the integration of science and compassion. As a leading academic medical center and home to a Level 1 Trauma Center, SHC operates a sprawling 2.1 million square feet campus in Palo Alto, California. The facility management and hospitality teams work diligently to ensure a safe, healing, and efficient environment that supports clinical operations alongside patient and staff experience enhancements. \n\nThe Director of Facility Management role at Stanford Health Care is not just about managing buildings; it is a pivotal leadership position focused on strategic oversight and operational execution across the hospital's expansive facilities portfolio. This full-time, onsite position is charged with driving facility infrastructure management that supports one of the nation's most advanced healthcare ecosystems. The Director works closely with Facilities Construction, Engineering, clinical leaders, and operations to maintain seamless coordination and communication, effectively mitigating risks and ensuring continuity of patient care. \n\nThis role involves leading high-impact programs such as Patient Room Optimization, Facility Modernization and Refresh projects, and critical Environment of Care and Fire/Life/Safety initiatives. The Director is responsible for operational reliability, safety compliance, and fostering a healing environment for patients, staff, and visitors. A systems thinker with a strong business acumen, the successful candidate will translate strategy into measurable outcomes, continuously improving patient and staff experiences through innovation and leadership. \n\nThe Facilities Services division provides essential non-clinical support around the clock, balancing planning, construction, general services, and operations to sustain safe and efficient facility functioning. Complementing this, Hospitality Services focuses on enhancing patient, staff, and visitor experiences via food services, environmental services, patient transport, and equipment management. \n\nThe Facilities Management Department supports this mission by managing the hospital’s property and facility infrastructure to maintain operational continuity, safety, and regulatory compliance. As a senior leader, the Director is integral to strategic planning, resource management, staff development, and cross-functional project leadership, advocating for policies and processes that uphold Stanford Health Care's commitment to exceptional care environments. \n\nKey responsibilities of the Director include setting the vision and leading the Facilities Management team, overseeing daily operational activities, ensuring life safety and emergency preparedness compliance, and liaising between construction project managers and hospital stakeholders. The position demands overseeing interior planning, space management, maintenance operations, and vendor relationships while managing budgets, strategic plans, and regulatory adherence. This leadership role also requires on-call availability during non-standard hours, including nights and weekends, to ensure emergency responsiveness and uninterrupted facility operations. \n\nThis role requires a bachelor's degree in a related field, along with at least seven years of progressively responsible experience managing complex facilities in a highly regulated environment. Strong knowledge of project management, safety regulations including The Joint Commission (TJC), OSHA, and Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) requirements is essential. Excellent communication skills, leadership capabilities, and the ability to manage multi-disciplinary teams and complex projects are critical for success. \n\nStanford Health Care offers a comprehensive, inclusive workplace that values diversity and equal opportunity. The institution champions a patient-centered culture through its C-I-CARE framework, emphasizing personalized, coordinated, and effective care. This philosophy guides all employees in delivering an exceptional experience for patients, families, and colleagues alike. The public salary range for this role generally starts between $83.98 and $111.27 per hour, with the final offer reflecting experience, education, and other relevant factors. \n\nJoining SHC means becoming part of an innovative healthcare legacy committed to transforming care delivery and improving health outcomes in one of the most dynamic regions in the world.
