The Director of Events role within AA&D is a senior leadership position tasked with defining the strategic vision and operational direction for the events department. This role oversees a portfolio of high-profile, institutionally significant events that require collaboration across various Harvard units, including the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), Harvard Alumni Association (HAA), University Development and Advancement Solutions (UDAS), and the Office of the Vice President for AA&D. As a strategic partner to senior leadership, the Director ensures that events align with the university's priorities, leverage innovative engagement opportunities, and maintain operational excellence.

This role demands exceptional leadership skills to manage a team of event professionals in a complex and fast-paced environment. The Director is responsible for organizational effectiveness, team development, budgeting, vendor relations, and the implementation of new technologies and best practices for event management. The position requires overseeing in-person, virtual, and hybrid events while fostering a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and respect. The Director ensures high standards of service delivery and drives continuous improvement to support the sustainable growth of the department.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in event planning or related fields
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership and staff management experience
  • Ability to carry up to 50 pounds
  • Availability for travel, evening and weekend work
  • Willingness to attend events and department retreats on campus
  • Ability to work hybrid with compliance to employment policies
  • Commitment to work 40 hours per week
  • Successful completion of identity and education pre-employment screening

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in event planning or related fields
  • At least 5 years of leadership and staff management experience in a complex organization
  • Strong leadership and organizational management skills
  • Exceptional strategic planning, project management, and operational oversight capabilities
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience leading through organizational change
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail, professionalism, flexibility, creativity, and resourcefulness
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and experience with CRM and project management systems
  • Familiarity with higher education, alumni relations, or advancement environments preferred
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion

Job Duties

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for the AA&D Events department
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of event professionals
  • Partner with the Executive Director and internal units to develop and implement a comprehensive event strategy
  • Serve as a senior advisor and thought partner to institutional leadership
  • Foster strong partnerships across AA&D and campus partners
  • Oversee and strengthen AA&D’s partnerships with campus services such as catering, facilities, HUPD, AV, and transportation
  • Contribute to organizational strategic planning and translate goals into actionable event strategies
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators for event effectiveness and operational efficiency
  • Lead integration of emerging technologies for in-person, virtual, and hybrid events
  • Oversee departmental operations including workflow, budgeting, vendor relationships, and service delivery
  • Develop scalable processes, policies, and best practices for event execution and departmental growth
  • Provide consultation on event strategy and best practices University-wide
  • Lead communication efforts and facilitate team and stakeholder meetings
  • Uphold AA&D’s core values fostering inclusive and respectful culture
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position
