The Maintenance and Operations (M&O) Department at WCPSS plays a crucial role in supporting the district's mission by overseeing the upkeep and functionality of all district properties. Among its critical pillars is the Environmental and Grounds Program, which is responsible for managing outdoor environments, grounds maintenance, regulatory compliance, and environmental safety protocols. This program ensures that district properties are maintained to the highest standard, protecting the health and well-being of the school community from potential environmental hazards.

The Director-Environmental and Grounds is a pivotal leadership role within the Maintenance and Operations Department. This exempt, full-time position is based at the Rock Quarry Road location in Raleigh, operating on a Monday through Friday schedule with occasional evenings and weekends as needed. Not eligible for telework or hybrid work models, the role demands hands-on leadership to ensure compliance with all applicable environmental and safety laws and regulations.

The Director's primary responsibility is to provide strategic leadership and oversight for the district’s environmental and grounds management programs. This includes supervising and enhancing comprehensive grounds maintenance, integrated pest management, and compliance with multiple federal, state, and local environmental regulations such as the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), indoor air quality standards, lead-based paint regulations, hazardous materials handling, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. The Director also serves as the district’s AHERA designee, ensuring that all training, inspections, and documentation meet regulatory requirements.

This role requires a strong background in environmental health and safety combined with management expertise to lead a multi-faceted team and program. The Director is entrusted with developing, implementing, and maintaining compliance plans, budget management, and resource allocation to ensure operational efficiency and long-term sustainability. By collaborating with various district departments, contractors, vendors, and regulatory agencies, the Director helps foster a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement.

Ideal candidates for this position will have at least five years of relevant experience, including three years in a managerial role overseeing complex environmental or grounds management programs. A Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences or a related field is required, with additional certifications such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or asbestos-related licenses preferred. The role demands professional skills in leadership, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving to effectively meet deadlines and implement strategic goals.
