The Director of Plant Operations at Trinitas Regional Medical Center within RWJBarnabas Health is a senior leadership role responsible for leading a diverse team of engineers, mechanics, and operations specialists dedicated to maintaining an optimal physical environment that supports outstanding patient care. This salaried position, with an anticipated annual salary range of $130,000 to $185,000 based on experience and qualifications, plays a critical role in managing and overseeing the operation and maintenance of major building systems including HVAC, electrical and power generation, refrigeration, plumbing, building infrastructure, and envelope as well as equipment and grounds regulatory compliance.
This role demands a hands-on leader who deeply understands the complexities of healthcare facility management and is adept at navigating the demands of a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. Key responsibilities include developing and executing preventative maintenance programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards, overseeing construction and renovation projects, and collaborating closely with senior leadership and external stakeholders such as the RWJBarnabas Health Facilities Management team. The Director must actively participate in safety and emergency management committees and be a driving force behind maintaining a quality-focused, patient-centered care environment.
Ideal candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or a related field, preferably mechanical, facilities, or electrical engineering, and 7 to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in plant operations leadership within healthcare or hospital settings. Certifications such as Certified Healthcare Compliance and Certified Healthcare Facility Manager are strongly preferred. The ability to develop and manage operating and capital budgets, and a solid understanding of regulatory compliance for agencies like Joint Commission, DNV, DOH, and local authorities, are essential. The role requires problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and a proactive approach to continuous improvement and operational excellence. The Director will help align plant operations with the hospital’s strategic objectives, enhancing efficiency and increasing both clinician and patient satisfaction.

Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or a related field
- 7 to 10 years of professional experience in plant operations leadership
- Experience maintaining and operating major building systems such as HVAC, electrical and power generation, refrigeration, plumbing, and building infrastructure
- Proven ability to develop and manage preventative maintenance programs
- Solid understanding of regulatory compliance for healthcare facilities
- Experience with construction and renovation project oversight
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or a related field preferably mechanical, facilities, or electrical engineering
- Certified Healthcare Compliance Certification and/or Certified Healthcare Facility Manager credential is strongly desired
- Proven experience leading plant operations in healthcare or hospital settings
- Demonstrated ability in developing and managing preventative maintenance programs
- Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance with Joint Commission, DNV, DOH, DCA, and local AHJs
- Experience managing operating and capital budgets
- Excellent leadership and team management skills
Job Duties
- Assess the reliability and proper operations of building systems and equipment in developing a preventative maintenance program
- Participate in weekly Joint Commission/DNV rounding to ensure remediation items are completed
- Oversee construction and renovation projects ensuring compliance with ICRA, ILSM, and applicable code standards
- Engage departmental and senior leadership to assess plant readiness and identify improvement opportunities
- Represent plant operations at Safety Committee, Joint Commission/DNV, and Emergency Management Committee meetings
- Drive compliance with regulatory testing schedules for emergency generators, fire systems, fuel tanks, and life safety systems
- Collaborate with RWJBH Facilities Management executive leadership on capital projects
