Job Description
Cornerstone University is a private Christian institution dedicated to integrating faith and learning in all aspects of academic and community life. Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the university embodies a Christ-centered mission and biblical confession that shapes its vibrant campus culture and academic programs. Known for its commitment to fostering spiritual growth alongside intellectual development, Cornerstone University places strong emphasis on living and working in community guided by its core commitments, which include the Cornerstone Christian World View, the Cornerstone Academic Vision, the Cornerstone Beautiful Christian Community, and the Marriage and Human Sexuality Position Statement. The university seeks team members who share these values and are committed to a gospel-centered lifestyle, ministering and discipling through a biblical worldview.
The Food Service Department at Cornerstone University is currently looking for a dedicated and skilled Dinner Cook and Closing Supervisor to join their team based at the Corum Student Union in Grand Rapids, MI. This is a full-time, 10-month hourly position reporting directly to the Chef. The role is integral to the daily operations of the food services team, ensuring that quality meals are prepared and served while overseeing the proper closing procedures of both the front of the house and kitchen areas.
The Dinner Cook and Closing Supervisor will be responsible for preparing meals that meet established recipes with quality and safety standards, preventing food waste, and maintaining strict food safety and allergen protocols. The individual must be adept at using kitchen equipment and accessing recipe databases via computer. This position requires a proactive approach to communication, providing regular feedback to the chef on recipes and how students respond to menu items, supporting continuous improvement of offerings.
This position is crucial in supervising the closing of the food service areas, ensuring that all stations have been cleaned properly, equipment shut down, and security protocols like locking doors, coolers, and freezers are followed rigorously. Additionally, the Dinner Cook and Closing Supervisor plays a vital role in training, developing, and overseeing student kitchen employees, helping to build a skilled and cohesive team.
Flexibility is key in this role, as the individual must be capable of cross-training across different food service positions, handle the pressures of a dynamic food service environment, effectively multi-task, and work some weekend hours. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and possibly extended work hours when necessary.
The ideal candidate will hold certifications such as Food Protection Manager and Allergen Certification, along with a minimum of two years of food service experience. Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and mathematical skills are essential to succeed in this role. Cornerstone University also expects all employees to actively live out their Christian faith, serving as mentors and leaders within the campus community consistent with the university's doctrinal statement and core commitments.
This position offers an opportunity to be part of a community that values faith, excellence, and service, contributing to the nourishment and well-being of students while upholding high standards of food quality and safety. If you are passionate about food service and committed to working in a Christian educational environment, this role provides a meaningful way to make an impact.
