Job Description
Cornerstone University is a faith-driven educational institution located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, known for integrating a Christ-centered mission with rigorous academic programs and community engagement. The university fosters an environment where students, faculty, and staff work and grow within a framework defined by spiritual values and academic excellence. Its commitment to nurturing both the mind and spirit is reflected in its core commitments, which include a Christian worldview, academic vision, the promotion of a beautiful Christian community, and a strong stance on marriage and human sexuality. As an organization, Cornerstone University values individuals who embody these principles and actively participate in a biblical worldview, thereby contributing to a positive, faith-based campus atmosphere.
The Food Service department, housed within the university's Corum Student Union, plays a crucial role in providing nutritious and high-quality meal options for students, faculty, and visitors. Within this department, the position of Dinner Cook & Closing Supervisor is an essential role that demands culinary expertise, leadership, and organizational skills. This full-time, hourly position requires a dedicated individual who can prepare meals with care to prevent food waste, ensure adherence to food safety and allergen protocols, supervise closing operations, and cross-train in various food service stations. The Dinner Cook & Closing Supervisor reports directly to the Chef and must be flexible with work hours, including some weekends and potentially extended shifts.
The role involves following established recipes, utilizing digital resources such as a recipe database, mastering kitchen equipment, and contributing valuable feedback regarding menu offerings based on student preferences. Moreover, this position includes training and overseeing student kitchen employees to maintain a high standard of service, cleanliness, and safety in both the front and back of the house. The closing supervisor responsibilities extend to ensuring all food preparation areas are properly cleaned, equipment is shut down, and security measures are upheld by locking doors, coolers, and freezers.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to manage pressure, perform multitasking, and uphold the university's core values in their interactions with students and colleagues. This means living out a gospel-centered lifestyle by serving as a Christian leader and mentor consistent with the university’s doctrinal statement, the Cornerstone Confession. The role not only demands technical food service skills but also requires a personal commitment to Christian faith and an alignment with the university's mission and values.
Overall, working as the Dinner Cook & Closing Supervisor at Cornerstone University provides a unique opportunity to contribute to a vibrant campus community while applying culinary skills and leadership in a faith-affirming environment. This position supports the holistic development of students and staff by ensuring quality dining experiences that align with Cornerstone's spiritual and academic commitments.
