Job Description

University Housing is a vital department within the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management at the University of Oregon. This department is deeply committed to fostering student success by creating inclusive, supportive communities on campus. University Housing's mission is to provide a comprehensive living experience through affordable, accessible, and state-of-the-art housing and dining facilities, alongside robust social and academic programs. These efforts aim to nurture future community leaders, innovators, and change-makers who will positively impact society.

University Housing prides itself on upholding values such as equity and inclusion, responsibility and integrity, innovation and continuous learning, and safety. These principles guide the daily work and practices of its committed staff, who strive to ensure all students receive an excellent experience while living and learning at the University of Oregon. The department encompasses various units, including Business Services Operations, Dining Services, Facilities Services, Promotions & Student Recruitment, and Residence Life. Operating as a $100-million educational and business entity, University Housing functions as a self-sustaining and self-liquidating agency, independent of tuition or tax revenue for its operating budget.

Living on campus at the University of Oregon significantly benefits students. Data shows that students residing on campus during their first year demonstrate higher academic performance, increased retention rates, greater graduation rates, and tend to complete their degrees more quickly than their off-campus peers.

The Dining Services Manager/Chef position is a key leadership role responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of one or more dining venues within University Housing's portfolio. These venues operate extensive hours, serving meals from early morning breakfast through late-night services, accommodating the diverse schedules of the student population. The role involves overseeing meal preparation quantities, ordering supplies, staffing allocations, and scheduling, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.

As part of a management team, the Dining Services Manager/Chef emphasizes teamwork, superior customer service, and culinary excellence. This position carries significant budgetary responsibilities, including staff and supply management, menu direction, enforcement of food safety standards, staff training, and personnel management. Supervision extends to approximately 40 classified staff members and 100 student staff, requiring strong leadership and operational skills.

The role demands flexibility, including willingness to work varying shifts such as nights, weekends, and holidays. Physical demands are consistent with those typical in the food service industry, such as standing for extended periods, lifting heavy items, and working in environments with temperature fluctuations and potentially slippery floors.

This position requires obtaining a Food Handler Permit and OLCC Service Permit, underscoring its commitment to maintaining health and safety standards. Reporting directly to an Assistant Director of Dining – whether in Retail, Residential, or Catering Operations – this role is integral to maintaining the high standards of University Housing Dining Services.

The salary range for this position is $62,000 to $72,000 per year, classified under the OS-OA05-Fiscal Year 2025-2026 compensation band, with a full-time employment fraction of 1.0. The role is regular and ongoing, emphasizing continued growth and stability.

The University of Oregon is proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package to eligible employees. This includes health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off, among other valuable benefits. Furthermore, the university maintains a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in its hiring and operational practices. There is an active emphasis on complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act and providing reasonable accommodations for applicants and employees with disabilities.

Equal opportunity employment is a core value, with the University prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, pregnancy-related conditions, age, disability, genetic information, ancestry, familial status, citizenship, military service, veteran status, and use of protected leave. The university also maintains strict policies against retaliation and provides resources for complaint and resolution processes.

Applicants are required to complete an online application, submit their resume, and provide three professional references. Candidates will be notified prior to reference checks. This crucial leadership role within University Housing Dining Services provides an exciting opportunity for a seasoned manager or chef to contribute to a vibrant, supportive campus dining environment that supports student success and community development.
