Job Description
Michigan State University (MSU) is a globally recognized public research university located in East Lansing, Michigan. It is renowned for its commitment to excellence in education, research, and public service. MSU offers a diverse and inclusive environment, promoting innovation and collaboration among its students, faculty, and staff. The university is dedicated to providing a supportive community where individuals can thrive both personally and professionally. With a strong reputation and extensive resources, MSU continues to be a leading institution in higher education.
Within Michigan State University, the Residential and Hospitality Services (RHS) department oversees operations that enrich the campus living experience, including dining services across multiple venues. The department is committed to upholding high standards in food production, safety, sanitation, and customer service to meet the diverse needs of the university community.
The Dining Services Manager II role at MSU is a full-time position located primarily at the Market in the MSU Union and Nucleus in Holmes Hall. This role is pivotal in maintaining the quality and consistency of meals served, ensuring that all food preparation aligns with established menus, recipes, and university standards. The manager is responsible for overseeing daily food production and presentation, guaranteeing compliance with university, state, and federal safety and sanitation regulations.
Beyond operational management, the Dining Services Manager II will lead staff efforts, including interviewing, recommending employment, scheduling, managing performance, and developing training programs to enhance team capabilities and service delivery. The position requires active collaboration with the designated supervisor to establish goals, prepare budgets, and track expenses monthly or as scheduled.
Additional responsibilities include coordinating menu management and creating new menu items to keep offerings fresh and appealing. The manager will also address customer feedback, resolve complaints, and identify operational needs such as equipment or furnishings to maintain a well-functioning and welcoming service environment. This role also supports food production and coordinates GrubHub order fulfillment, emphasizing adaptability and responsiveness to fluctuating operational demands.
Importantly, this position is classified as critical status, requiring the Dining Services Manager II to report to work even during university closures or emergency conditions like snowstorms, ensuring the continuity of services. Although a remote work agreement may exist, there may be instances requiring on-site presence to support the MSU community effectively.
Overall, this role offers a unique opportunity to be part of an esteemed university’s food service operations, contributing directly to the quality of life and satisfaction of its campus community. The position not only demands strong managerial and operational skills but also offers the chance to engage in a dynamic, supportive work environment with opportunities for professional growth. Salary is commensurate with experience, reflecting MSU's commitment to attracting and retaining talented professionals who uphold its values and mission.
