Job Description
The Salvation Army is a globally recognized evangelical movement and a vital part of the universal Christian church. Founded on principles rooted in the Bible, this esteemed organization carries out its mission driven by the love of God and a commitment to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ while addressing human needs without discrimination. Operating for more than a century, The Salvation Army has branched into a wide range of community services, including disaster relief, social services, and camp programs, all underscored by Christian values and outreach. Known for its compassionate service and spiritual mission, The Salvation Army continuously strives to inspire hope and change lives across diverse populations. This particular employment opportunity reflects the organization’s dedication to providing structured and meaningful programming for youth during the summer months.
This temporary full-time Summer Day Camp position will be active from May 27th, 2026 through July 24th, 2026, offering a meaningful chance to contribute to a faith-driven environment while gaining valuable experience in food service and camp management. The pay rate for this role starts at $81.20 per day, depending on experience and certification credentials. The role primarily involves coordinating, training, and managing the summer camp staff alongside the Head Cook to ensure efficient and safe preparation and serving of meals. The workforce typically serves groups ranging from 15 to 250 individuals, mainly children and teenagers aged 6 to 18, with usual group sizes of 75 to 150 campers. This position requires enforcing all health and safety standards mandated by the Department of Health, managing food storage and inventory, preparing reports and maintaining detailed records related to menus, food orders, and food production.
The role also offers an opportunity to directly influence the quality of camp life by supporting special food events such as cookouts and snacks at designated programs, while also accommodating for specific dietary requirements. Unlike many other food service roles, this position integrates into a broader camp environment, where the selected candidate will have the chance to participate in general camp activities and staff meetings, fostering a collaborative camp culture. Supervisory responsibilities comprise co-managing the dining room staff with the Head Cook, including employee training, assigning work, evaluating performance, and resolving workplace concerns, all adhering to organizational policies and legal regulations.
Applicants should be committed to supporting the mission of The Salvation Army and fostering a Christian atmosphere throughout the camp programming. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated personal relationship with Christ, experience working with youth, and a character reflecting the Christian standards of the organization. Additionally, a background in food service management is essential, with at least two years of documented experience or related training preferred, as well as some college education. Essential skills include proficiency in English communication, both written and verbal, competency in math for various calculations, and the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and the internet effectively.
Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, sitting, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work will involve exposure to fluctuating outdoor temperatures, occasional mechanical equipment, and moderate noise levels. The Salvation Army embraces diversity and encourages candidates from all backgrounds, including veterans, people with disabilities, those impacted by the justice system, and individuals without a college degree, to apply. This temporary summer position serves as an excellent opportunity to gain experience in camp food service management while contributing to a faith-based community mission, blending practical skills with spiritual outreach in a rewarding environment.
