The Dietary Unit Clerk role within the Nutrition and Food Services department supports the hospital's mission to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care and unforgettable customer service through fresh and nutritious food. This position is a per diem role offering 10-20 hours per week, including weekend shifts, ideal for professionals seeking flexible work schedules in a healthcare environment. The Dietary Unit Clerk is essential in processing all patient menus, including those for the tray line and room service programs, ensuring patients receive meals aligned with their dietary needs, restrictions, and preferences. This role involves direct communication with patients and clinical staff, helping patients select food options according to clinical nutrition protocols, and updating computerized diet records. The clerk generates tally guides for food production and ensures accuracy in patient meal delivery by coordinating closely with production staff throughout the day. Job Requirements
- Possession of, or eligible to obtain a Washington State Food Worker Card within two weeks of employment
- One year of experience as a Dietary Unit Aide in a health care facility or equivalent
- High school graduation or GED
- One year of additional experience may substitute for the educational requirement
- Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration
Job Qualifications

- Knowledge of patient dietary needs and hospital menu systems
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to use computerized ordering and tracking systems

Job Duties
- Receives and processes diet information such as dietary needs, restrictions, and preferences from patients and from the units, including diet changes
- Assists patients in selecting food choices as directed by clinical nutrition protocols
- Meets/speaks with patients to understand preferences and special needs
- Receives and processes diet orders via computer or telephone
- Updates diet information, preferences, and orders in computerized kardex
- Generates tally guide for tray-line production staff at specified times
- Communicates any additions to the production staff throughout the day
- Checks tray-line for accuracy and appearance of patient meals, as needed
- Answers questions and gives direction to department staff regarding patient meal production and delivery
- Answers telephone calls from patients and clinical staff
