Job Description

The American Heart Association, founded in 1924, stands as a leading non-profit organization dedicated to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke. Over nearly a century, the Association has successfully contributed to cutting cardiovascular disease deaths by half, showcasing a commitment to impactful health advancements. With a mission to promote longer, healthier lives free from the disparities of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and other factors, the American Heart Association continues to inspire change, innovation, and community engagement in the public health landscape. The organization operates with a vision for building healthier communities through breakthroughs in science, policy, and care, aiming to make these benefits accessible to everyone regardless of background or circumstance.

We are currently seeking a dedicated Development Director to join our team in Richmond, VA. This full-time position plays a crucial role in generating revenue for the Heart Walk fundraising campaign, an iconic event in Central Virginia that mobilizes local support to fund life-saving research and programs. As a Development Director, you will be an integral part of a small, close-knit team responsible for planning, executing, and managing strategies that drive significant fundraising outcomes. Your role involves direct engagement with corporate sponsors, individual donors, and volunteers, contributing toward the team’s overall achievement of raising over $1 million annually.

In this role, you can expect a dynamic, fast-paced environment reminiscent of sales-driven cultures where meeting and exceeding revenue targets is essential. You will be challenged to prospect new business opportunities continually while nurturing existing relationships to ensure sustainable support for the American Heart Association's mission. The position offers a base salary accompanied by a performance-based incentive plan that can add up to 25% of the base pay, encouraging a results-oriented approach to your efforts.

The American Heart Association values work-life harmonization, reflected in our supportive policies and resources aimed at accommodating our team members’ diverse needs across the various stages of their lives. Employees gain exclusive access to our award-winning corporate university, Heart U, which provides extensive training and professional development resources designed to enhance competencies and foster career growth. Additionally, you will participate in a culture known as #TheAHALife, emphasizing inclusivity, respect, and recognition—where every employee is seen, heard, and valued.

As Development Director, your responsibilities will include cultivating and securing sponsorships and donations from corporations and individuals, building a pipeline of prospects, developing compelling proposals, leading volunteer recruitment and engagement, and collaborating closely with communications staff to optimize campaign awareness. This role requires approximately two days per week of office and field work, alongside frequent local travel to engage stakeholders effectively. Access to reliable transportation and the physical ability to assist with event logistics are necessary.

Joining the American Heart Association means becoming part of a mission-driven organization that values your impact and contributions. We are committed to providing you tools and support to thrive professionally while making a tangible difference in public health. If you are passionate about fundraising, relationship-building, and contributing to a life-saving cause, this position offers a rewarding opportunity to grow your career within a respected and influential nonprofit.
