Job Description

The American Heart Association (AHA) is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that has been a leading force in the fight against cardiovascular disease since its founding in 1924. With nearly a century of trusted leadership and impactful programs, the AHA has successfully cut cardiovascular disease deaths in half and continues to push forward in pursuing innovative solutions to today’s most pressing health challenges. The organization is propelled by a dedicated team of passionate individuals committed to advancing health equity and ensuring a healthier future for all communities, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or other diverse backgrounds. Known for its robust advocacy, research, and public health campaigns, the American Heart Association strives to save lives through education, support, and groundbreaking scientific breakthroughs.

Within this inspiring and mission-driven environment, the American Heart Association is currently seeking a Development Director for its Oregon and Southwest Washington market. This full-time, field-based role is primarily focused on driving revenue by leading peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns such as Leaders of Impact, Women of Impact, and Teens of Impact. The Director will play an instrumental role in managing fundraising strategies to meet aggressive revenue targets, securing vital contributions, and broadening the donor and volunteer base to amplify the Association’s mission impact. This position requires local travel within the greater Portland and Vancouver areas, with some overnight travel expected to foster strong relationships and execute events successfully.

Structured as a dynamic and fast-paced sales environment, the Development Director is empowered with numerous resources including access to Heart U, an award-winning corporate university designed to support employee learning and development. The role combines relationship-building, strategic fundraising, event management, and volunteer coaching with a strong emphasis on accountability and compliance with organizational fiscal standards and legal regulations. Employees of the American Heart Association experience a unique culture known as #TheAHALife, which emphasizes work-life harmonization and values where employees feel seen, heard, and valued professionally and personally. This culture, combined with competitive compensation, performance incentives, and comprehensive benefits, makes this an attractive opportunity for motivated professionals who want to make a measurable difference in public health.

The Development Director will be supported by collaborative teams across the Division, Region, and Association-wide networks to ensure alignment of initiatives and provide consistent fundraising support. This role requires strong networking skills to engage high-level donors and volunteers, including C-suite executives, and to create impactful donor cultivation plans and events. A core responsibility involves coaching and empowering volunteers to maximize fundraising success while fostering an enjoyable and rewarding volunteer experience. The position also demands proficiency in Microsoft Office and effective use of CRM systems to document appointments, donations, and communications accurately.

Offering a competitive base salary with an incentive opportunity of up to 25% of base pay contingent upon the achievement of revenue goals, this role represents a financially rewarding and professionally enriching career step within a revered nonprofit. In addition to salary and incentives, the American Heart Association provides extensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, retirement plans with employer matching contributions, wellness programs, and tuition assistance. Paid time off and holidays reflect the organization's commitment to employee well-being and work-life balance. The AHA’s mission is clear: to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives, and this position offers the chance to be a crucial part of that transformative journey.
