Job Description

The Ann Arbor District Library (AADL) is a vibrant public library system serving the diverse community of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the surrounding Washtenaw County area. The Ann Arbor District Library is currently seeking a part-time Desk Clerk to join its Public Experience & Desk Service Department. This pooled position offers an hourly starting pay of $19.32 and falls under a union-represented role. The position is designed to provide friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient service at public service desks across the various library branches. The Desk Clerk will work under the guidance of the Public Experience & Desk Service Manager and the Public Experience & Desk Service Leads. The work schedule is part-time, requiring a minimum of 15 hours and a maximum of 20 hours weekly, including evening and weekend shifts to meet the library's operational needs.

In this customer-facing role, the Desk Clerk is expected to be highly engaged with patrons, assisting with their information and circulation needs in person, over the phone, via email, and other communication channels such as social media networks. Responsibilities include checking out and returning library materials, issuing library cards, processing payments and fines, and accurately handling cash register transactions. The position also supports library events that cater to all age groups and performs various clerical tasks that help maintain efficient library operations.

Ideal candidates should possess a strong commitment to excellent public service characterized by helpfulness, friendliness, energy, and adaptability. Effective communication skills are crucial to connect with a diverse range of patrons. Essential to the role is the ability to assist users with computing resources and troubleshoot standard hardware and software issues, escalating unresolved problems to the electronic help desk. The Desk Clerk will maintain the public areas' appearance during shifts, perform opening and closing procedures for service desks, and contribute to web content management for the library's website.

This position demands good judgment, interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and the capacity to manage multiple tasks efficiently while standing and moving throughout shifts. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree GED or six or more months of related experience and or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Applicant must be 18 or older unless high school diploma or GED has been obtained
  • Strong commitment to excellent public service helpful friendly energetic and adaptable
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public executing both verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to acknowledging and welcoming each library patron utilizing AADL facilities as well as attending AADL events
  • Experience with and comfort in using and troubleshooting computers printers and photocopiers as well as a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows protocol
  • Ability to work standing up for extended periods of time as well as move around as necessary while transitioning efficiently between tasks with continued attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team without direct supervision
  • Interpersonal and judgment skills necessary to work effectively with library users staff and visitors
  • Ability to complete detailed work accurately

  • Education beyond the high school level preferred
  • Successful experience working in a library or other public service retail organization preferred
  • Strong computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word Excel and major web browsers preferred
  • Work experience in libraries or familiarity with use of library catalogs and databases to locate materials preferred
  • Experience using a library automated system preferred
  • Understanding of the public library's many purposes including circulating materials and providing a variety of experiences to library users preferred
  • Knowledge and enthusiasm about the features of the library's collections preferred
  • Experience and desire to work with library users of all ages preferred
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure preferred
  • Work experience in serving the public preferred

Job Duties

  • Work regular shifts on system-wide public service desks providing ready reference services readers' advisory services and general info about the library and its services
  • Serve the public by checking-out and checking-in library materials collecting fines issuing library cards handling cash register transactions and preparing bank deposits
  • Answer library users' questions and handle everyday problems involving interpretation of the library's procedures to provide the best possible service for patrons of all ages
  • Monitor the appearance of the public areas during assigned shifts and perform opening and closing procedures for the public desks at assigned locations
  • Provide support at library events for all ages
  • Assist users in gaining access to computing resources and resolving library hardware software and printing problems and log unresolved technical problems to the electronic help desk
  • Perform a variety of clerical tasks which may include pulling library materials and preparing materials for programs and displays
  • Serve on system-wide work groups and attend meetings as assigned
  • Contribute content to the library's website via a content management system
  • Maintain a prompt and reliable attendance record
