The Host / Hostess position at Denny's is an essential role reporting directly to the General Manager and Restaurant Manager. This vital team member is the first point of contact for guests entering the restaurant and is responsible for greeting and seating guests in a friendly and courteous manner while maintaining a professional presentation. The role involves receiving payment and assisting other service personnel to ensure complete guest satisfaction throughout the dining experience. The Host / Hostess must effectively manage guest waiting lists, adhere to proper seating rotation, and provide special accommodations when needed. Additionally, this role requires handling cash and credit transactions accurately while demonstrating safe cash handling procedures according to policy. The ideal candidate will possess strong product and menu knowledge to offer promotions and suggestive selling while welcoming guests into the establishment.

Beyond frontline hospitality, the Host / Hostess position involves administrative tasks such as maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the foyer and restaurant menus as well as completing required side-work and deep cleaning assignments. Given the pace and demands of the job, the role requires physical stamina to stand and walk for the entire shift, lift supplies up to 30 pounds, and operate within the restaurant’s work environment that may include exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals. The Host / Hostess must demonstrate excellent communication skills, listen carefully to guests' needs and concerns, respond promptly and courteously to complaints, and work collaboratively with other team members without needing constant supervision. Flexibility in scheduling, including working nights, weekends, and holidays, is imperative to meet the needs of the restaurant and its guests.

Job Duties

  • Greets guests immediately in a friendly manner upon arrival and acknowledges at departure
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency and meets service cycle timing standards
  • Seats guests at clean, dry tables utilizing proper seating rotation
  • Determines and provides for any special needs of guests
  • Maintains guest waiting list and adheres to proper seating order procedures
  • Describes promotions and suggestively sells while seating guests
  • Takes initial beverage orders
  • Attends to guest needs during the dining experience
  • Demonstrates safe cash handling procedures and accurately completes transactions
  • Uses proper telephone etiquette
  • Enters and delivers To Go orders correctly
  • Addresses complaints promptly and courteously
  • Assists service personnel with beverage orders, table clearing, and setting
  • Assists team members willingly without being asked
  • Maintains supply of clean menus
  • Lifts and carries supplies and equipment up to 30 lbs
  • Demonstrates knowledge of station and floor breakdowns
  • Possesses strong product and menu knowledge
  • Maintains a clean, organized foyer area
  • Completes all required side-work including deep cleaning
