The Delivery Driver position at Performance Foodservice plays a critical role in the country's food supply chain. Drivers are integral to ensuring that food and food service products are delivered reliably and safely to customers, supporting vital community services and businesses. This role involves operating tractor trailers or straight trucks on a variety of routes, including intrastate and interstate, local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight deliveries. Drivers are responsible for managing the timely delivery of products, maintaining vehicle safety standards, and upholding Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. They act as the face of the company, building lasting relationships with customers through professionalism and outstanding service.

Delivering this level of service demands a strong commitment to safety, accuracy, and efficiency. Drivers perform thorough pre- and post-trip inspections of their vehicles, ensure that freight is properly loaded and secured, and meticulously complete all necessary paperwork. They interact professionally with customers, vendors, and coworkers, handling tasks such as unloading products, managing customer returns, and collecting payments when required. This position requires flexibility given the variable start and end times, with drivers typically working upwards of 12-hour days and schedules that may include occasional Saturdays. With an average annual pay of $83,000, the role offers competitive compensation reflecting the important responsibilities entrusted to the delivery drivers.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent
  • 6+ months commercial driving experience
  • valid CDL-A
  • must be 21+ years of age
  • meet all state licensing and/or certification requirements where applicable
  • clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for past 3 years
  • pass post offer drug test and criminal background check
  • pass road test
  • attains or has valid current DOT health card or able to secure a new DOT health card
  • able to hand-lift and utilize two-wheeler, lift gate and/or other equipment to move product cases/freight ranging from 10-35 pounds up to approximately 60-90 pounds
  • able to work variable start/end times including occasional Saturdays
  • able to work 4 or 5 day work weeks with shifts averaging upwards of 12 hours

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • six months or more of commercial driving experience
  • valid CDL-A license
  • minimum age of 21 years
  • compliance with all state licensing and certification requirements
  • clean motor vehicle record for the past three years
  • successful completion of drug test and background check
  • passing score on road test
  • possession or ability to obtain a current DOT health card
  • ability to safely handle and move freight weighing between 10 and 90 pounds
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • adherence to DOT regulations and company safety policies

Job Duties

  • Communicates and interacts with customers, vendors and co-workers professionally ensuring questions are answered accurately and in a timely manner
  • functions as a team member within the department and organization as required
  • performs all required safety checks including pre/post trip inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to DOT regulations
  • reports all safety issues and/or repairs required
  • follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
  • immediately reports all safety hazards and inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
  • performs count check of items and reviews customer invoices of loaded products
  • completes all required paperwork associated with freight accurately and legibly
  • moves tractor to loading dock and attaches preloaded trailer as needed
  • drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
  • unloads products from trailer and transports items into designated customer storage areas
  • performs damage control checks on items, scans, and contacts supervisor regarding order removals
  • verifies delivery of items with customer and obtains proper signatures
  • collects payments where required and secures trailer doors
  • ensures tractor, trailer, and freight are always secured
  • unloads damaged goods and customer returns and completes necessary paperwork
  • performs general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keeps trailers clear and clean
  • completes daily record of hours of service and enters in log as required
  • secures all equipment and completes paperwork at end of shift
  • performs other related duties as assigned
