The role of a Delicatessen Clerk at Hy-Vee is crucial to maintaining the quality, safety, and efficient operation of the delicatessen department. This position is non-exempt and typically involves part-time or full-time employment working within the deli section to provide excellent product handling and customer service. Job Requirements
- Must be 18 or older
- Less than high school education or equivalent experience
- Six months or less of similar or related work experience
- Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
- Basic arithmetic skills including fractions, decimals and percentages
- Must be able to perform medium physical work including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Availability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to adhere to company policies and procedures
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen
Job Qualifications

- Six months or less of similar or related work experience
- Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions

- Ability to maintain personal hygiene and dress standards according to company guidelines
- Capable of performing required physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds
- Familiarity with food safety and sanitation procedures
Job Duties
- Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
- Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store
- Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible
- Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, passing along customer suggestions or requests, and performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience
- Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful customer service including taking customer orders
- Takes customer orders at the delicatessen counter
- Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
- Reviews orders for the day
- Practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures work area cleanliness
- Reviews the status and appearance of food for freshness
- Ensures adequate food supply is ready and follows a production list
- Anticipates product needs daily
- Prepares, finishes, and replenishes products as necessary
- Checks in product, puts away product, and reviews invoices
- Runs department registers and processes payments where applicable
- Removes trash in a timely manner
- Maintains strict adherence to personal hygiene and dress guidelines
- Adheres to company policies and store guidelines
- Reports to work on time as scheduled
- Washes dishes as necessary
- Orders product and supplies as necessary
- Delivers orders as needed
- Prices products for customers as necessary
- Assists in other store areas as needed
- Performs other job related duties and special projects as required
