The Delicatessen Clerk role within Hy-Vee’s Delicatessen Department is a vital position responsible for a variety of operational and customer service tasks. As a non-exempt employee, the Delicatessen Clerk will handle food safely in accordance with company sanitation standards while maintaining a clean and organized work environment. This role involves preparing, finishing, and replenishing products that meet quality and freshness standards. The Delicatessen Clerk also operates department registers, handling customer payments accurately where applicable. Job Requirements
- Must be 18 or older
- Less than high school education or equivalent experience
- Six months or less of similar or related work experience
- Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
- Ability to solve arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages
- Must be able to perform medium work including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Must have vision capabilities including clarity, color vision, depth perception and field of vision
- Physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions
- Willingness to adhere to company policies, personal hygiene and dress standards
- Availability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Prior experience in food service or retail is a plus
- Customer service skills
- Ability to operate cash registers and handle payments accurately
- Basic math skills

Job Duties
- Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
- Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store
- Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible
- Assists customers by escorting them to products they’re looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests, performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience
- Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service including taking customer orders
- Takes customer orders at the delicatessen counter
- Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
- Reviews orders for the day
- Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat
- Reviews the status and appearance of the food for freshness
- Ensures that an adequate food supply is ready and on hand and follows a production list
- Anticipates product needs for the department daily
- Prepares, finishes, and replenishes product as necessary
- Checks in product, puts product away, and may review invoices
- Runs the department registers and receives payment, makes change, etc., where applicable
- Removes trash in a timely manner
- Maintains strict adherence to personal hygiene and dress guidelines
- Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
- Reports to work when scheduled and on time
- Washes dishes as necessary
- Orders product and supplies as necessary
- Delivers orders as needed
- Prices products for customers as necessary
- Assists in other areas of store as needed
- Performs other job related duties and special projects as required
