The role of department manager within this company entails overseeing daily operations in the deli and bakery departments. This position requires managing department performance goals, scheduling staff according to customer volume, and ensuring that associates are well-trained and evaluated regularly. This role involves direct customer engagement, preparing deli and bakery items, providing product samples, and educating both customers and associates on promotions and company offerings.

In addition, the department manager plays a crucial role in inventory management, budgeting, expense control, and profit and loss reviews. They will coordinate promotional activities, update pricing and promotional signage, and maintain proper food temperatures and safety standards. The job demands attention to detail with inventory processes, equipment maintenance, and safety compliance to safeguard both employees and customers. While a food handler's permit is required upon employment, a high school diploma or equivalent, management experience, and retail or deli/bakery experience are highly desirable. Bilingual skills are also considered an asset. Job Duties

  • Promote trust and respect among associates, with a positive attitude
  • Communicate company, department, and job specific information to associates
  • Establish department performance goals and empower associates to meet or exceed targets through teamwork
  • Develop adequate scheduling to manage customer volume
  • Train and develop associates on performance of their job and participate in the performance appraisal process
  • Adhere to all local, state and federal laws, company guidelines, food safety regulations and guidelines
  • Create an environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important and appreciated by answering questions regarding specials and products sold within the department/store
  • Prepare deli/bakery items per customer requests and slice deli meats and cheeses using proper equipment
  • Offer product samples to help customers discover new items
  • Provide customers with fresh products and correct portion sizes to prevent shrink
  • Inform and educate department associates on promotions and create and implement department promotional plans
  • Prepare and submit seasonal critiques for sales and merchandising
  • Assist store management in budget preparation, expense control, profit/loss reviews
  • Schedule price changes by updating shelf tags and promotional signs
  • Plan and organize inventory process, maintain stocking conditions, note discrepancies, and train associates on inventory and Computer Assisted Ordering
  • Prepare foods according to food temperature logs and cooking instructions
  • Reinforce safety programs by complying with safety procedures and inspecting equipment
  • Report safety risks, illegal activities such as robbery, theft, or fraud
  • Perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
