Job Description

Military Deli & Bakery Services (MDBS) operates as a specialized food service provider within the US Military Commissary system, proudly offering high-quality deli and bakery products at 103 military commissary locations across the United States. The Deli-Bakery General Manager role at MDBS plays a critical leadership part in maintaining the company’s high standards and positive work environment. This full-time managerial position is designed for an individual with a passion for food and people, someone who thrives on delivering outstanding customer service and managing a motivated team. The role involves comprehensive oversight of deli and bakery operations including training and supervising associates, managing budgets to meet sales and profit goals, and ensuring compliance with food safety regulations. Beyond daily operational responsibilities, the General Manager is expected to foster team unity, provide immediate feedback through praise and recognition, and develop a workplace culture of respect and professionalism.

In this role, the General Manager is also responsible for directing product preparation, pricing, and presentation to enhance sales and customer satisfaction while utilizing suggestive selling techniques to boost business performance. Regular activities include conducting weekly sales meetings, updating seasonal merchandising, and preparing efficient work schedules that maintain service levels while controlling labor costs. This position demands strong communication abilities, conflict resolution skills, and adherence to both company and government policies. Physical demands include frequent lifting of items up to 50 pounds, prolonged standing, bending, and manual dexterity, reflecting the dynamic and hands-on nature of the work.

This position requires a valid Food Safety Management Certification or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, reflecting MDBS's commitment to food safety and regulatory compliance. The role involves working some nights, weekends, and holidays to ensure consistent customer service across all shifts. Job Requirements

  • Must be able to perform the essential job functions of this position with or without accommodation

Job Qualifications

  • Management experience in retail, food service and/or Deli/Bakery
  • knowledge and understanding of all equipment in the Deli/Bakery such as slicers and ovens according to company guidelines
  • effective communication skills
  • ability to deal with conflict and resolution within the department while maintaining a professional relationship
  • manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
  • valid Food Safety Management Certification or ability to obtain one within 30 days from hire date

  • updates department for seasonal merchandising
  • attains budgeted sales and profit goals
  • prepares weekly work schedule to ensure adequate coverage and service level, while adhering to weekly sales/labor rate
  • monitors, complies, and enforces government and MDBS policies and procedures
